    Trek X-Cal 7 (coil) vs 8 (air)

    Hi All,

Looking to make my first legitimate bike purchase (currently riding a 10 year old bike from Sports Authority). I'm a recreational rider and will mainly be riding single tracks in the downstate NY and Long Island area.

I'm currently able to receive a 20% discount on any Trek bike, and am quoted at $720 for the X-7 (coil) and $880 for the X-8 (air).

After some reading on these boards I see that air forks are regarded as being superior to the coil. The only reason I see to step up to the X-8 is the addition of an air fork - is the performance of an air fork actually noticeable and worth making this upgrade? Unless the impact is substantial, I'd probably opt to sticking with the X-7 - I've also seen that air forks require more maintenance than a coil.

    Appreciate any feedback on this.

I would go with the x-cal 8. The fork is a very good reason to upgrade, but you also get a step up on the drivetrain and rims. Overall a good deal at the price you are able to get.
