Snow Tire Quest/Question

Last year I rode my cross bike in the snow and this year I have a KM SS I have a setup with a set Motoraptors. When I ride on the streets the front wheel will grap the ruts of snow left buy the cars, although not as severe as the cross bike. I can't justify buying a Pugsly for the few snow days we get in KC (OK I just don't have the cash right now). I can just imagine how much better a 4" tire would track straight. I've got a set of 2.3 Exi's on the way, but I'm not expecting much, I'm getting them primarily for the trail because it's ridged. I'm running about 35 PSI. I'm not sure if lowering it would help any, although I'm going to run the Exi's at 25-27.
I'm also thinking maybe some spikes (The sheet metal screw trick) might help , but then again it's freak'n snow. What do I expect?
