New question here. Rig or Van Dessel Buzz Bomb

So I have the 29" wedding anniversary present approval! Ten Blessed years of marriage and a new bike!

I'm considering a fully rigid used - like new - Van Dessel Buzz Bomb
Or I can wait for the new Fisher Rig to come out.

    What do you think?

    Pros- Cons?

    I have truly commited a faux-paux (Spelling????)

I posted my question before I have done a lot of research on 29's - I've got the fever as they say.

I thought I would read the FAQ tonight. Then I can look for some used Monkey's - what do new ones sell for?

If it came down to the Monkey and the Rig what then??

I have between $500 - $1 grand to play with. And I'm in no BIG hurry - but would like to get one by spring.

    Thanks for the help!

What size bike do you want? The bike shop I ride for is selling a used 19" buzz bomb, for a fellow rider. I rode one all last winter and have to say it was a great ride for the price. I think they are selling it for under $500. Let me know if you are interested and I can find out for sure.

I hate to say it, but the RIG is still the best value in that price range. YOu could get a basic buzz bomb, or a basic monkey for same/less than 1000, but it wouldn't be near as much bike as the RIG...

    What size do you need?

Other poster: what size the BB your LBS is selling, how is it equiped, and what is their phone number?

Here is a web review of the exact bike by the ownwer, Ron on 63xc. The bike now has a new set of Truvativ ss cranks. He said he wanted $450, for the complete bike.

Saw this yesterday on Dirtrag. I'm not sure if this is a posting violation, but here is the link. If it is, feel free to delete.

Noticed the D/R server isn't working so well right now, so it may take some time to open the link.

Klien, will a size 19 work for ya? They $450, that's pretty cheap...could be a good first foray into 29es...

Sorry for the delayed response - I had to get back to work.

As for sizing - I typically ride a large frame 26" bike. Usually 20-21" seat tube.
    Is the 19" a medium?
If so any different sizing when riding a 29? (I wouldn't think so)

I'm 6' tall with 32" inseam and about 210 lbs.

Price look right on the BB - and would be nice entry into 29's ... but I don;t mind waiting for awhile and getting the RIG is it would be a BIG difference in ride quality, parts selections etc...

As for what I want to spend. That is relative to new or used
    New - for now $1k
Used - between - $350 - $500 (I'm thinking if I spend over $500 on a used I could drop another $400-$500 and have a brand new bike with new parts, warranty, shop suppport etc...)

I'm going to check out the links above for the one mentioned on this post.
Here is one I'm watching on eBay:
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...sPageName=WDVW

What do you think of it? Looks like it is a medium - I would assume that is a 19" frame?

    Buzzzzzz

Ron told me that it was a large either a 19" or 20" he couldn't recall for sure. Ron is almost the exact same size as you, maybe a few pounds heavier. I had the medium frame and it was a 17". I am impartial to the whole thing, so it really doesn't matter to me. I think it would be a great way for you to try out the 29' ss thing without waiting or spending much cash. If you like it, you could sell and upgrade pretty easily. I sold mine for $600 in one day, Ron doesn't really care so he is not trying hard to sell his. I am sure it will be around for a while, so you have time to weigh your options. I will post a few pics of my old VD when I get home tonight.

That one on ebay is a medium 17" just like the one I had. It would be way to small for you.

OK - that is good to know. I like a roomy cockpit. I do like the look of on on eBay. Looked pretty clean and ok parts selection for the price. But no matter how great the price and bike that is too small is no fun. In fact being 'too small' was the sellers reason for listing...

Here are some pics of my old Buzz Bomb. Ron and I got them at the same time. Ron lives about 1.5 hours away, but his Buzz Bomb is at the LBS here in town. I could probably go down and take some pictures of it in the morning if you are interested. I talked to him tonight and he told me to sell it for $450. Let me know.

Thanks for the pics - I appreciate you posting them. I would like to see some of Ron's bike.

Also - you said it was spec'd like the one in the review (earilier in this post) execpt for the cranks is that right?
Do you know what gear ratio he is running? Also what tires?

I would apprciate some pics if you get out to the shop tomorrow - or when ever you can make it by.

    thanks for your help.

I will take some pics and post them for you in the morning. As for a parts list off the top of my head, don't quote me but I think this is close.

Surly rear flip flop hub laced to Velocity dyad rims w/ wtb motoraptors, the same exact combo as my bike.

    older Avid brakes and Levers?

Race Face stem w an aluminum riser bar

Truvativ Stylo SS cranks and bb only 2 months old.

    Surly fork, like mine

The bike has a thud buster, but he wants to keep that seatpost and replace w/ something else.

Gearing could probably be changed to whatever you want in the rear.

His bike has been ridden but is a good deal for $450. It was at the SSWC04 in Germany last year. Ron loves to party...ehhrrr I mean race.

I will post some pics in the morning and you can go from there.

    Guys, posting guidelines? Art. 3?
PM people that look for deals, NO forum posts unless accompanied by a classifieds ad link. You owe MTBR $2 for the ad, you agreed to their guidelines not to post things for sale.

I don't know why the Buzz Bomb gets such a bad rap -- well, maybe not "bad" per se, but it is often downplayed or quickly dismissed.

I bought one blindly two years ago, and it has been the best fitting, best handling bike I have owned. Dumb luck on my part, but it worked. If I ever go custom, I'd start with the Buzz Bomb's geometry and modify from there. I can't compare the Buzz against Surlys and Fishers and other 29"ers, as the Buzz is the only one I've ridden. But to recommend The Rig, a bike that isn't even available yet? Maybe only on price. (And lets pretend those Sci-Con components don't exist in the real world.)

1strongone1 - Thank you for taking the pics. I got tied up in some car repairs over the weekend. Glad I didn't bid on the eBay bike as I needed some ca$h. I'm going to have to hold on the bike project for a little while - not sure how long but definately not this month. Ron's bike looks good and I saw the other post from a VD rider. Please let Ron know to sell to the first person with ca$h in hand.
If I can raise the funds and I decide to go with the VD I will PM you.
Thanks again for the help - I appreciate you going out in the snow to get the shots.
