    Dream Bike 2009 Edition:

Sooo its 2009 and there are a whole lot of new advances in the 29er world and I am bored waiting for some new parts to arrive so I thought I would pose the ultimate, dream bike question

If the $$$ is not a concern what would you pony up for?

    Here is mine:

Independent Fabrication Deluxe Frame designed around...
120mm TA Manitou Minute-29r Super Absolute Fork
    Chris King Headset
    Thomson Stem/Post
    WTB Power V Saddle
    Salsa Pro Moto Flat bar
    ESI Chunkys
    Avid Elixir Carbon
    King Hubs
    Gordos
    Mountain Kings F&R
    X.0 shifter and rear mech
    990 Cassette and Chain
    Middleburn Crankset 1x9 set up
    Phil BB
    MRP's sweet new chainguide

So what would you build? Do you already have it? Post it up if you do!
    Winter is coming.

I would love a really burly steel soft tail (or hard tail). :)

    That's a good question!

I would like a 29er free ride bike, but that's kind of silly, I think I'd be much better off with something like my voodoo now, but with some tweaks. Such as....

Curtlo soft tail 29er with a 1.5" diameter headtube, gussets, nice somewhat beefy steel, v brake and disc mounts, fender mounts and vertical dropouts (or maybe paragons or cross check horizontal dropouts.) Decent BB height, sloping (not slopping) top tube. Something you could do a lot of 3 or 4 foot drops and not worry about but have a basically trail bike geometry.
172.5 mm cranks... middleburns or race face atlas AM. Some nice BB like a phil woods or one of the Enduro ones.
A thru axle drop loving rigid fork with v brake and disc bosses. Capable of taking a 2.7 inch tire. Probably equal to a 80mm fork. (I'm only 5'11", would probably make the fit of the bike a little better.)
Something like the WTB DD FR wheels I have now, but with nicer slightly hubs
A second set of wheels built up with Kris Holms rims for when I go out "urban riding" with my friend with a downhill bike with slicks.
Maybe a third set of wheels with something like A719s and CX Ray spokes, for "racing"
Avid SD Ulitmate v brakes and nice v levers.
    FSA The Pig Downhill headset
Either that Surly bar, or a FUBar
    Thomson stem
    Nice Ti seatpost
A seat that doesn't hurt my butt
A 1x5 (4?) drive chain with a 8 speed grip shifters, or a nice fiction shifter. I guess that makes my rear wheels need that profile hub that's built for that kind of thing.
    A short cage rear derailleur
One of those fancy new chain guards
BMX flat pedals and a set of SL eggbeaters

I can appreciate the newer, lighter stuff, but I want something dependable and tough, and I want to be able to jump without fear of breaking things. Discs are nice, but I haven't needed them riding around here as I am a V brake setup ninja.

Edit: oh, and some Nokon housing, since money is no object.

After 2 years, my single speed hardtail upgrades are almost complete, so a no nonsense, no carbon, no flex, geared, FS29er trail monster would make a nice second bike:

    '09 RIP9
    some sorta 120mm thru-axle fork
    I9 wheels w/Flow rims
    Rampages tubeless
    Magura Marta SL brakes-180/180
    XT cranks (175mm)
    959 pedals
    King headset
    Thompson post/stem
    Rocket V Team
Pro Moto alum flat bar, 17 degrees
    ESI chunkies
    XO shifters/rear derailleur

Or maybe just wait for a high-quality 5" FS 650b frame and throw similar parts on it.

I've heard a lot of nice stuff about 29er. I wanted to have mine built for lightness (10kg) and speed so here's my list for my upcoming 10kg 29er with weight approximates.

Sette Razzo Frame (1.2kg for small frame)
    Sram X9 Gear set (1.8kg)
    Avid BB7 Mechanical Brakes (700g)
    TruActiv Crank (340g)
    RST M-29 Fork (1.8kg)
    Thomson stem (350g)
    Thomson seatpost (300g)
    Sette Carbon handlebar (280g)
    Sette Foam grip (neg)
    Wheels & Tires (3kg)
    Carbon Seat (150g)

A light titanium or high-end scandium Pivot 529 at 3 kgs Something like a blend of Minute and Reba 90-125/130mm adjustable, tapared steerer tube +head tube, 20mm axle and 12mm ta on the rear dropout.
Stan's Flow 36H made in Carbon like Edge rims.
    Lighter CK hubs
A sort of G2 handling 51mm offset. That's it for now.

Edit: Hardened Titanium spokes like Aerolites. Targeted wheelset 1800 with lighter CK ti spokes + carbon 36h Flows-max 460 grams.

    Easy

Frame- Lynskey Level 4 Custom Frame; Nothing crazy, just a traditional double diamond frame with me and my riding style in mind, suspension corrected (in case I get old or contract arthritis both of which will happen) Custom Ti Surly KMonkey style dropout for wheel and disc caliper Rear Derailleur Full Length style housing style stops (in case I want to ride gears when I travel, again if I get older or just want to ride gears.)
Fork- Black Sheep Unicrown Ti Fork- Built for strength with nice thick tubing and steerer and a QR15 or 20mm thru axle
Headset- Cane Creek 110 (Nuff said)
Bar- Blck Sheep Flat Tracker Handlebar 11deg backsweep 640-660mm width, just within those specs
Grips- Ergon GX-1 (Big time no brainer)
Stem- Moots Ti (only decent Ti stem around that I know of)
Seatpost- Kent Eriksen Sweetpost Setback for extra cush
Brakes- Hope Tech X2 180mm Front 160mm rear Stainless Braided Hose, Metallic Pads Floating Rotors
Saddle- Bonti Race Lite Inform 146mm
Cranks- XTR with Boone rings 32,33,34,36t for SS
    BB- Chris King BB
    Pedals- Shimano XTR
Cogs- Chris King Stainless Full Size run (or Ti if they decide to get crazy)
Wheels- Chris King ISO and ISO SS on Flows with DT Supercomp (I'd have wished I9, but I like steel spokes)
Tires- Anything big and wide, probably Stout Front, Ardent Rear (or some soon to come big big tire that isn't crazy heavy maybe 1000gr. I mean come on, the Racing Ralph is a BIG 2.4" and only weighs 720gr or something like that. Give me a 2.6-2.7 front that weighs 1000-1100gr.)

Probably forgot stuff but those are the important ideas flying around my brain. Hopefully it would be in the 19-21lbs range. That would just be a smart well rounded build. Expensive, but not so chi-chi carbon this carbon that, that I would have to worry about anything too much besides it getting stolen.

All Metal, No carbon and I mean NO CARBON. This coming from someone with a Superfly SS in the garage with more carbon than I can imagine on it. This is my unicorn. Mine! I don't want anything to break from a little wipeout. I want it to be able to bounce around and have fun and not worry about a thing. I'm going to do that with my Superfly, but I'll pay for it at some point. Not worried either way

    Awesome Thread!

    Easy...

    DW Sultan w/ a 150mm TA for a dishless rear. (A full 5" of travel'd be nice.)

A TA suspension fork to make a dishless front.

Right now I'm building a nice rig (not exactly dream-like, just nice):
Air 9 w/ my On One Carbon fork.
2x9 drive (Old RF LP compact 5 bolt sq taper w. PW BB)
    King bolt on rear.
    Paul Word "bolt" front hub.
    Bonti TLR rims

I was able to build my dream bike a couple of years ago. After 25yrs of riding and about a dozen high end bikes to figure out what works best for me and my riding style. This is what gets my fat ass 210lbs. (10- 15 lbs over ideal) around my local out of shape excursions or training/riding 50-60+milers.

    Castellano Silk Ti 29er
    Maverick SC32
    Formula Puro Uno/ 180mm rotors
    CK/Arch wheelset
XO gripshift/ XTR / carbon and Ti bits

25lbs.4oz.- Ready for an all day backcountry adventure. Not weight shaved for the scale.

All around dream to ride. From experience w/ builder to climbing or carving a singletrack, it has surpassed my high expectations when I ordered.

Keep the thread going, I love hearing what others lust after. ( in their dreams or in their garages)

    Ride safe all!

Well this was my Middle-Class dream build that finally happenned in 2009!. It took me that long to find the Paragon frame I wanted! I got a Chris King headset, Xt Crank and Front derailer, X-9 Shifters(in silver) and rear derailer. Bontrager Race stem/ Bontrager Race wheels, Reba Race Fork, Race Face bars. Juicy brake's(black), ExiWolf's and a Rocket saddle with Titanium rails. From the Bontrager seatpost clamp to the Bontrager top-cap I put on, this was my 26.5lb dream Paragon. That Definately rides like one

Just posted a photo of this bike(09 GF Paragon) but I'll throw it in here too. I'm VERY happy with this bike & the complete built was under $3,000. The only thing I'm not sure about is my choice in the front tire, 1.9 Kenda Karma. I only have one ride on this tire so far & it was in wet conditions. I'll give it a few rides in better conditions before changing it.

Love those wheels on that 09 Paragon. I have the same bike and love it. The white frame is just sick as acan be. I am quite happy with my Bontrager stock tire though. The more i ride on them the more i like them.

I changed my mine on the crankset. I will be going with the new generation Hot Rod Cranks that Bill Grove is making.

    Those are "dream Grips"...

Actually, it's not mine. The owner might've run out of $$$ after the wheelset and the custom Seven handle bars.

My dream bike is a Van Dessel HT 29er.I already have the frame and plan to build it with very similar specs to my Jersey Devil FS 29er. Both rigs equate to my dream setup.

Van Dessel Jersey Devil HT (24.5 lbs)
    Crank: Cannondale 2x9 Hollowgram
    Fork: Fox F29
    Wheels: Stans 29er Wheels
An assortment of Titec and SRAM parts to boot. Probably XO since I can't justify XX even if I am loaded.

I also have a Ramble Tamble frame that I built up for a commuter SS 29er rigid. Nothing fancy but quite delicious!

I am banking on these bikes to carry me through the next four seasons of riding/racing.
