    double chainring on a Cannondale 29er 2

    I just bought a used 2008 Cannondale 29er 2 on eBay:

and was amazed to find a double chainring. This is my first mountain bike, but I have done a lot of road riding and looked at a lot of bikes and I have never heard of a double chainring on a mountain bike, and so far as I can tell not in the Cannondale specs:

Is this normal? How did this bike get a double? The seller says he bought it new and did not change the chainrings.

I have not had a chance to count the teeth but will soon.

It's a triple crankset with the big ring removed and replaced with a bash ring. I have the same bike. You'll be glad you have it. The BB height is a little low. The seller claiming he bought it that way is questionable, unless he requested it. Don't bother counting teeth, it should be stamped or printed on the inner side of each chain ring

You are exactly right. It has 22/32 teeth and an outer RaceFace ring which says "104MM BCD - 34T".

I'm curious about the BB height. It is speced at 310 mm

Compare to 304 mm ("Low Setting" whatever that means...)

    and 315 mm

Do all of these have low BB height? What do you like or recommend?

The Cannondale geom chart also lists BB "drop" of 6 cm. What is that?

I guess most or all of the mtn bikes I have seen before are fairly average and probably used for city riding. I only discovered 29ers a couple of weeks ago! I'm learning...

    The BB "drop":

If you drew a straight line between the front, and rear axle, then measure from the line vertically downwards until you reach the centre of the BB (in the case of the Cannondale 29"er the BB would be 6cm below this line).

I don't have any issues with the height of the bottom bracket. But my 26'er is a Rush with a notoriously low BB.
