    confused on sizing

i'm 5'11 with a 33 inch inseam. i have been receiving mixed signals on what size bike i should get. i think i've made my mind up on a motobecane 29pro sl (and i'm open to criticism as it may affect my decision in the long run) and i'm a beginner in the bike scene. the LBS sat me on a 19" x-cal (which i love but just can't afford) and it felt fine. i then was told that i should try a 17" but they didn't have one in stock. I'm very torn because i don't want to mail order a bike that is the wrong size for me. please help. any insight will be greatly appreciated.

Top Tube length is more important than stand over. As long as your arms are not super long, then I would rock a 17 inch. I am 5' 11", with about a 30 inch inseam and I ride a 18 inch frame. Just comparing geometry's on them I would get the 17 inch Motobecane. The 19 inch Motobecane might suit you if you have longer arms. Do some research, and good luck. Check out the Motobecane forum, and see if any one else in there has the same measurements as you.
