Comparing closeouts - '12 Jamis Dakota D29 Race vs. '13 El Mariachi 2

Trying to compare these bikes (can't test ride). The El Mariachi 2 is a steel bike while the Jamis is aluminum. Components are nearly identical. The El Mariachi 2 will cost me $225 more after shipping. Is the Salsa worth the extra money?

Salsa has a 15mm TA fork and looks better IMO.
The wheel is a extension of the foot

I should mention I mainly ride grave/crushed stone trails and single track. When I ride single track, the tracks are fairly technical with some decent hills. I'm in central NC so not the best mountain biking around. The trails are gravel or crushed stone, flat with gradual inclines/declines.

I do not race or do endurance riding.

I'm not sure how much you care about weight, but that Salsa is going to be a heavy bike, but might ride a bit better than the Jamis.

Out of curiosity, where are you located in Central NC? I'm in the Triangle and there's some pretty good trails here. Charlotte has a pretty good selection too. Neither place has epics like the mountains, but for major metro areas, they're pretty good.

I am in the triangle also. I live next to the Tobacco Trail which I ride for exercise and then hit Briar Chapel or Crabtree for single track. Agree we have some pretty decent places around here.
