    It's the thread/pitch designation

Basically, get an english thread BB that has a 73mm shell width, or one that's compatible with both shells (68 or 73mm). The bb axle width will depend on your crankset, different cranks have different Q factors, requiring different widths of axles. To complicate it further, you may opt for a different width axle if you're losing a couple rings, say in a singlespeed setup, the clearance for the small ring may allow a slightly shorter axle.

There are three types of (relatively) common BB types, English (most common), Italian (less common) and French (I've never seen one). They differ in diameter, thread pitch, thead direction, etc. Most newly produced frames will take an english BB. They're so common, that if you don't specify, you'll end up with english. I would imagine that anything else would be a special order...
