    Advice on rear suspension

Hi. I've got a Specialized Camber Comp carbon 29er 2011/12 with a Fox Triad rear suspension. According to various sites it's a 200mm x 49mm unit. When I measure it I get 198mm x 57mm. I'm measuring from the centre eye to eye, and from the base to the working end of the piston (see pics), is this wrong? I want to upgrade to Rock Shox Monarch RT3, I've found 1 for 100 new but it's 197mm x 54mm. Will this fit? All advice much appreciated. Cheers

Your stroke measurement is likely incorrect. The shock will not necessarily use all the available exposed shaft on full travel. The shock is likely limited internally to 49mm of shaft travel per Specialized.

Here is your bike (I assume) in the Specialized archive and it is indeed a 200X49 shock.

The Monarch you mentioned is shorter in overall length and longer in stroke. There is a good chance you would create unwanted contact somewhere on full travel. Or, maybe not??? I have monkeyed around with different shocks on Spesh bikes in the past with some success. I would ask in the Specialized forum to see if anyone there knows of a good size substitute.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I've measured my shock this morning and the stroke is 49mm (let the gas out and measured). Even at full compression there was still at least 10mm clearance between the swing arm and the upright. I think I can get away with the monarch, Would slacken the head angle a little too. Worst case scenario may need to use an offset bushing or a spacer to reduce stroke?
