Good job! 2010.75 FS 29er Shootout Rankings

I have been seeing a lot of Specialized Epic 29er (you could fill this in with another brand & model, but recently, the Epic 29er seems to be the buzz) vs. XXX Brand 29er. I saw a thread asking for recommendations for a 4" or less FS 29er (where I saw more info about a possible Ibis Mojo 29er). Most recommendations were the bike people had or wanted (which is to be expected). I also read through the FS 29er Shootout by MTBR (somewhat outdated IMO, as will this thread be soon).

So, I compiled a list (not comprehensive and not all-inclusive yet...feel free to add others) and would like to know your Top 5 (or 10) for FS 29er. The criteria being: if someone were to gift you a bike (free to you...not to turn around and sell, but for your riding pleasure), what bikes would be on your list?

    FS 29ers
Astrix Monk, Canfield FS 29er, Cannondale Scalpel, Dean Ace 3.5, Dean Baja, Ellsworth Evolve, Erikson-Ventana, Foes B-29, Funk LaRuta, GFC by Trek HiFi, GFC by Trek RumbleFish, GFC by Trek Superfly100, Giant Anthem X, GT Marathon, GT Sensor Pro, Intense 2951, Intense Spider, Intense Tracer, Kona Hei Hei, Lenz Sport Leviathan 3", Lenz Sport Leviathan 4", Lenz Sport Lunchbox, Lenz Milk Money, Lenz Sport PBJ, Moots XZ-29, Niner Jet 9, Niner R.I.P. 9, Niner W.F.O., Norco Shinobi, Pivot Mach 429, Rocky Mountain Altitude, Salsa Big Mama, Salsa Spearfish, Santa Cruz Tallboy, Siren Symphony 3.5, Specialized Camber, Specialized Epic, Specialized Stumpjumper FSR, SyCip Double Dribble, Titus Racer X, Titus Rockstar, Tomac Diplomat, Turner Sultan, Van Dessel Jersey Devil, Ventana El Capitan, Ventana El Patron, Ventana El Rey, Voodoo Canzo, Zinn Gigabike, Zinn Megabike, Zinn Terra 3.0, Zinn Terra 5.0, Zinn Terra World 3.0, Zinn Terra World 5.0...post others and they will be added.

    My Top 10
    1. Specialized S-Works Epic 29er
    2. Santa Cruz Tallboy
    3. Pivot Mach 429
    4. Titus Rockstar Ti
    5. Turner Sultan (DW)
    6. Rocky Mountain Altitude
    7. Canfield FS 29er
    8. Intense Tracer
    9. Ellsworth Evolve
    10. Specialized Stumpjumper FSR

Once Ibis (Carbon Mojo 29er), Banshee (*Claymore*) and Yeti (Anything Carbon) come out with FS 29ers, I'm sure they will be on this list...

    Good idea...

    My Top 4
    1. Specialized Carbon Epic 29er 2011
    2. Santa Cruz Tallboy
    3. Superfly 100
    4. Ibis Mojo 29er

The FS 29er carbon bikes are one step above the aluminium so I would sell any other bike in your list

    In alphabetical order:

    Lenz Behemoth
    Lenz Lunchbox
    Lenz Milk Money
    Santa Cruz Tallboy
    Specialized Stumpjumper

I have no use for most of the rest of the designs out there. Deciding between the above bikes will be biased by travel and suspension preferences. They all have great geometry for me.

No need for a list, for me. There is one bike on my list:

    Intense Tracer 29.

I rode a 26" Intense for over five years and never felt the need to replace it until I rode a 29" bike.

That said, I'm not sure I could do a bike like the Tracer justice. I'm doing the same riding and more on my Banshee Paradox and therefore I'm hesitating on investing in a full suspension 29". Perhaps there is a less expensive and lighter bike that I'd be happy with. With that in mind, your posting seemed interesting.

There might be some interest in Specialized Epics and others, spurred in part by marketing but it is also meant to be a race bike. Lumping all the bikes you have listed together doesn't work. How do you compare an Niner WFO or Lenz PBJ with the likes of a Epic or Jet 9.

Perhaps a shorter list targeting a more specific riding style would be useful. I would like to know what style of riding people favor and where they ride, when posting their lists. I for one ride in the rocky North East, hence my interest in the Tracer.

    Ronnie.
The trouble with having an open mind is that people will insist on trying to put things in it.

Please excuse my newbiness. Is there a reason GF hifi/rumblefish is not getting any love on this board. I was looking at the stumpjumper and hifi/rumblefish and decided on the r-fish because it just seemed to fit me better. Also because the LBS was heavily discounting all Trek stuff and I was able to get a r-fish for $2000. It is on lay away right now and I can still switch to the stumpjumper if I want. I was assured by dealer that the 2010 models had improved frame design and all the breakage and stiffness problems were pretty much handled. I cant afford an intense or ellsworth; in my price range the stumpjumer and hifi/runblefish seemed like the best choices. So why no love for the fish?

Because this thread is all about "boutique bike" dreams. Not what bikes are a good value.

Congratulations! You found a deal on a bike that you like. Ride the heck out of it, and don't worry about whether you're on an "approved by the 29er board" bike.

So you're telling me that the $4400 S-Works Epic 29er frameset is not boutique (according to the Specialized website, there is no 29er S-Works Stumpjumper FSR)? IMO The only ones on that list that are not perceived as boutique would be the Rocky Mountain and maybe the Santa Cruz.

Splitting hairs here... it is more a perception of Specialized as a whole not being thought of as a "boutique" bike company... but while Specialized it self may be too large to be considered a boutique company anything such as the S-Works Epic 29er that is priced to such a niche audience would be considered a "boutique" item...

Boutique or not boutique...that is the question...
And it doesn't really matter. When I started this thread, I wanted to see what bikes people would list if given as a free present.
@ Steve_N: Thanks for Siren Symphony 3.5 addition. I like the overall look of Siren Bikes...even more knowing they have an FS...
@ moschika: Thanks for the SyCip DD input. Nice looking bike. I, too, hope an Ibis Carbon Mojo becomes a reality.
@ skepticman: Looking forward to seeing that Salsa Spearfish. The Big Mama is what got me hooked on the 29er kool-aid. Fun bike.
@ Menzo: I agree, test riding and riding experience would be nice.
@ Ronnie: You are right, my friend. As usual, good insight. Sub-categorizing would be nice. Initially I was going to post <4" Travel XC/XC Race-Type Bikes, but did not want to exclude some Niner or Lenz or Turner peeps. Plus, I like inclusivity. Can't we all just get along?
@ scjohn: You have a nice bike on layaway. I'm all for "whatever gets you out and riding!" Your bike selection and budget is well beyond "whatever", congrats & enjoy. Stay tuned for my "Reasons For Posting" (it applies to your post, as well as how some others feel).
@ 2TurnersNotEnough: S-Works SJ FSR, you are correct. It looks like I am the only offender (other than my OZ bro-sorry for leading you astray ozzybmx). Wishful thinking? It will be corrected. Thank you. As for boutique or not, the lines are not clearly defined, or they are and people lean towards boutique for a wish list. Either way, no harm...no foul...

Some of my "Reasons For Posting" include, but are not limited to:
    1. I saw threads comparing the Epic to others...
    2. A lot of real world reasoning was used in these threads (i.e.-personal budget constraints, LBS proximity, brand availability, etc.) understandable...
    3. I would like to know true feelings of what people like, no restraints...
    4. I tried to clearly state the ratings list would be a free gift, not to resell, but for personal use, pleasure and enjoyment...
    5. The reason for #4 was to try and avoid what I saw far too often: that's not a good choice because it costs more than xyz...I only had $abc to spend so I chose xyz and you should, too...I can find this one on sale for an awesome deal, but I really like (or would rather have)...
If I ask for advise on a Yamaha vs. a Honda vs. a Kawasaki, and someone throws in a Harley on sale, great price, close to what the others are going for, cool (IMO). But, unfortunately, it seems IMO people are suggesting Vespas (which can get fairly pricy...nothing against Vespas BTW), because budget only allows for...sometimes perceived value can skew our vision...
Or if deciding upon a Mercedes or BMW, someone suggests, go with Toyota...does the same logic apply when deciding between Ferrari and Lamborghini, go with Mercedes...
If you would choose xyz bike over another, because it is $500 less, would you choose the other way if the other bike was $500 less?
Anyway, I just wished to remove these factors & find out what people really thought...YMMV...FWIW...

    proto

That is a prototype that we did just to evaluate a few things. It is actually a Balance frame modified into a 29 DH bike. It is 4.8" or 6" travel. We never gave it a name.

So the Evolve was great then? I've had an Epic Comp 29er since Feb. and got home yesterday to find that the rear shock eye was cracked. I'm 6'4" and 225, ride singletrack and hit some 2-3' wooden jumps to sloping landing on a weekly basis. Nothing crazy, I'm 53 and never broken a frame in 20 years of mountain biking. It looked like the bushing didn't rotate within the sleeve of the shock eye and wore one side of it down until it was thin enough to crack. Sorry, no pics, my dealer shipped it back today. Anyway, I'm thinking the Epic may be more race bike than what I need. I did call Spec customer service and was told that the Epic was XC specific and for riders who "look to keep their wheels on the ground". I do enjoy the small jumps that I hit and don't want to be limited. My dealer recently started selling Ellsworths and everyone he has sold has gotten rave reviews, but they were all 26ers. He said he would give me a generous trade on the Epic to help me out (I've also shopped at same shop for all 20 years). The Evolve looks very nice, although I was surprised to see that it has chain stays over 18". I thought everyone was going shorter. The Epic does handle great and the Brain works really well.

I will say I have ridden a lot of FS 29ers and the Evolve was the fave for me. It is a great choice. It is plenty stiff, but light enough to move out nicely. I prefer the non-pedal feedback of ICT suspensions over things like VPP. The chainstays are pretty short, but not the shortest out there. It probable helps the stability of the bike having them a bit longer with the sacrifice of faster handling. (Can't have it all). But it seems to handle just fine for me in the twisties with a 100mm fork. I love it!

I called Ellsworth and the rep actually rides the Evolve as his personal ride. He said they make up the chainstay length with a steeper head tube angle to keep the handling quick. He said he has been thrashing his for several years with no problems.
    Thanks for the feedback.

    Thanks for the feedback.
I've been riding my Evolve for a little over a year and LOVE it. Went from a 26" FS (04 GF Cake) to this and the difference is night/day. Very smooth, very stiff and the workmanship is unbelievable. Plus the pivots seem bombproof to me. I went with the stock Float R shock instead of the optional RLC.

I got a screamin deal last year from Beyond Bikes, they were blowing out the Evolves after Ellsworth didn't sell enough of them at Sea Otter.

My only concern was the WTB wheelset that came with the bike -- I had heard they were no good so I got a set of Shimano 29er tubeless ready wheels with the bike. The Shimano wheels have been pretty good but I wish I had something a little more durable in the rear (I have broken spokes twice, at that point the wheel goes out of true real quick). Got the DT Swiss centerlock adapters for the discs, which is a very nice design for mounting 6-bolt rotors to centerlock wheels.

Bike came with Thomson stem/post, X.9 drivetrain, Avid Juicy 3 brakes. The only other components I upgraded (besides the wheels) were King headset and XTR front derailleur.

Just curious: why no love for the Superfly 100? Seems like we have the Epic and the Tallboy--both racy carbon bikes--dueling it out for the lead in the desirability stakes, while the Superfly, which fits the same niche, is totally left out. I don't necessarily disagree, I'm just curious as to why so many folks love the Epic and Tallboy and don't even put the Superfly in their top 10?

RM Altitude 29'er is one of the best out there! Got to demo it and its very very nice, 120mm of travel that pedals like much less. Also liked the Sultan, and tallboy!

Not sure of everyone else's thoughts but for me:
well I know there has been alot of controversy about this on the forums, but I personally know of several guys that have cracked them...often more than once. I've never heard of another frame that seemed to have so many cracked.

I often buy expensive items used, and a SF100 would be SWEET, but I've never seriously thought of buying a used Superfly 100 frame b/c of the frame problem.

I agree with this. I have personally broke 2 and they forced me into a medium (i still fit the small better) and have had add'l issues. The last was the rear triangle had a massive sway and the LBS had to glue a piece. Very scared on this bike holding together and plus the entire Trek thing - this bike is definitely off my Top 10 and I own 1! I have 4 people on my team also on them and 3 of the 4 have broke.

    1. Specialized Epic S-Works 29 (just ordered one)
    2. Santa Cruz Tallboy

I know I previously said that I would put the Intense Tracer 29 at the top of my list but Intense to my surprise is showing a new 29" bike at EuroBike. The Spider 229 which may now be on the top of my list. I don't know too much about it and I'm eager to get the details. The bikes they called the Spider have always been lighter. It has two positions for the rear shock so I'd guess it probably has 5" of travel like the 26" Spider.

The trouble with having an open mind is that people will insist on trying to put things in it.

    Here is my list:

Coming from a motorcycle background it's all about handling.

All below need 120mm through axle fork to improve handling.

    1. Pivot 429 - Now if Pivot would just increase the travel like they did on the 2011 Mach 5
    2. SC Tallboy
    3. Tracer 29er - not ridden yet but love the long travel (140mm Reba when available)
    4. Turner Sultan
    5. Evolve
    6. Lenz 4" - nice light weight bike (good for racing), but does not handle like the Pivot

    My lIst:

    1. Santa Cruz Tallboy - Ridden for 3 months. The best mountain sled I've ever ridden.
    2. Niner RIP 9 - Rode one for 2.5 years. *****in bike
    3. Pivot 429 - Never rode one but like the DW design
    4. Turner Sultan - Never rode one but I like DW design
    5. Gary Fisher Superfly 100 - I agree, Fisher is not boutique but the SF100 is one sexy ass piece of carbon

... and if we just ... Ellsworth Evolve 120mm

Alright, heard news about a 120mm Ellsworth Evolve...not sure when, but it changes up my Top 10.

    My New Top 10
    1. Specialized S-Works Epic 29er
    2. Santa Cruz Tallboy
    3. Pivot Mach 429
    4. Titus Rockstar Ti
    5. Ellsworth Evolve 120mm
    6. Turner Sultan (DW)
    7. Canfield FS 29er
    8. Intense Tracer
    9. Lenz Leviathan
    10. Specialized Stumpjumper FSR

I personally never understood an XC Race-style/weight frame built up in the 27/28# range (26# on the lower end). But, at a more XC Trail friendly, the 120mm EE makes more sense and moves ahead of the DW Sultan (even though the Sultan pedals better IMO)...therefore no reason to keep the RM Altitude on the list...I am now putting a Lenz on my list looking for a demo to see what the hype is all about (they are intriguing...)...also, highlighted all the Top 10 list bikes I have ridden (obviously not the S-Works Epic or 120mm EE)...

The overall Top 10 rankings are unaffected by this change...

Which 29er full suspension to buy?

The one I'm buying is the Stumpjumper FSR Expert 29er, because it meets my needs and I'm getting a good deal on it. But here is the dream list:

    3. S-Works Epic 29er
    4. Pivot Mach 429

Have you had a chance to demo the Rockstar Ti? There are some Alu versions around that are similar, but it's not the same. Have you found an LBS with one? Or an online retailer?
Anyway, as my list goes, I would choose the Ti over the Fly. The SF100 put a nice grin on my face, but not enough to keep me from thinking & looking at hydroformed titanium...

I guess I should change my name to Riphreddy since I now own a Rip 9. I have heard the Evolve is really nice, but you can get a Rip 9 for MUCH MUCH less $$ plus the Evolve is old technology compared to the Rip 9 in my opinion.

Pivot Mach 5.7 29er with Reba 140mm. Just imprison Chris Cocalis and order him to design and test it for you. As long as he is at large, it won't happen. People begin to muse when they are forced to.

Hmm interesting results. here's my lineup

    1. Turner Sultan DW
    2. Turner Sultan TNT
    3. Niner Jet9
    4. Ellsworth Evolve -
    5. Niner Rip9

I own a Sultan TNT and cant say too much about it. I have tried Sultan DWs several times, in different setups. It is simply a wonderful all day trailbike.
The Niners and Ells I have tried also and have liked. I liked the Jet over the others because it was simply so fast and light.

I run a 120mm Fork on my Evolve and it is set-up as a fun, every-day sort of trail bike. It is the kind of bike you just want to keep riding; awesome for all day epics.

I have ridden my Salsa Big Mama all summer and it is my first niner Awesome bike but for a 4" travel bike it is too hefty of a frame. I was going to get a Santa Cruz TB but instead I am saving my Pennies for a Lenz Behemoth. The TB is the new model Once all the frames are sold out there will be refinements. I had a first generation Blur and wished I had waited In the mean-time I will love my Behemoth & possibly get a used TB next fall. On a side note I have been riding a 575 (Owned 2) for 6 years I just sold it I am done with 26ers But I do miss that 575

    Lenz Behemoth
    Tallboy
Yeti (If the ever make an FS 29er)
    Ellsworth

@ChipV: TY for the 120/100 info on the Evolve...travel was not my main issue, weight was. The Evolve felt like a burly enough frame, IMO (I consider it a "lightweight" XC Race-style frame, that could kill it on the trails, sprinkled with light AM fun...YMMV). But, most builds I saw were bulky, IMO.
If Ellsworth keeps the Evolution frame similar to the Evolve weight, and people build it up the way they did their Evolves, you will have a 120/120 or 140/120 XC Trail/AM bike that weighs 26-28#...nice
IMO, the new, lighter Evolve frame will be built up sub-25#, where it should have been all along...IMO...YMMV...YRMV...

Sounds great! Now, what about if you're on a budget, lol!!

How about a 'Bang for the Buck' list of great trail 29r's that won't fall apart if you're over 200 lbs??

P.S. It would be great when people give info on these lists if they also gave RIDER info (like your weight, etc). I'm sure everyone's choices are affected based on relevancy to their actual needs and riding style.

Check here for a "budget" Pivot Mach 429...not sure if you have an LBS that has Pivots or would price match...or if you know of other places with better deals...

What's so great about the Tallboy? I only had a chance to take a quick spin on it, and most likely had it on wide open in the back. Coming off a rigid bike, I thought it was crazy pillowy. If that makes sense. Super sketchy climbing too, but then again I have no experience on full sussy's. Comparing it to the Epic...

They were always overpriced anyways. Farewell Titus.....I wasn't going to shell out that sort of coin anyways when a Niner is 1/2 the price and a better bike.

    awesome thread.

    here's mine

    1. Santa Cruz Tallboy - Just ordered with full XO build kit, 120mm fork, RS Reverb and Stan's Arch rims...2 week wait..... argh!!!!!
    2. Trek GFS Superfly 100 Elite - go see one in the flesh, they look awesome
    3. Specialized S-Works Epic Carbon 29er - too expensive. If this was the same price as the Tallboy my decision would have been very difficult...
    4. If Yeti ever make a DS 29er (it might go to number 1)
    5. Trek GFS Rumblefish 2
    6. Pivot Mach 429 (if it was a bit lighter, shorter TT with less agressive geometry I would have bought one)
    7. Niner RIP 9 - beast!
    8. Titus Rockstar Ti - there should be more titanium ds 29ers than the handful available
    9. Intense 229 - first time I saw it was on this thread...sweet machine.
    10. Ellsworth Evolution - with everything blacked out

    1. Specialized S-works Epic 29er - on someone else's dime? Oh yeah, gotta run with that! Are you kidding?

    2. Santa Cruz Tallboy - similar rationale as above, just with the mysterious benefactor getting a little cheap on me.

No use going deeper into the list if price is no object and I'm not paying for it. I'm not even sure I'd list second place, but I guess I just did.

Yeah, a lot of folks are voting what they've got, voting based on cost, etc., the poll results do not reflect the question actually asked (what would you get if it were free).

Maybe because a lot of folks got just what they wanted...?

The "what would you get if it were free" question is fantasyland stuff.

Back in the real world, I think this thread reveals two things:

    1. for those don't yet own one of these bikes, which ones seem to be held in highest regard by the majority of people.

    2. for those that do own one of these bikes, how is their steed measuring up against some very hot competition.

None of this is a replacement for assessing a bike on its merits, its suitability for you personally, and how it rides (if you are lucky enough to live somewhere where demo bikes are a reality). But every little bit of feedback and research helps in making your choice.

I did mountains of research (pardon the pun), weighed up all the options, test rode a few bikes, but wasn't able to test ride the bike I finally chose.

When the Tallboy arrives next week, I doubt I will be dissapointed!

Why? I researched the reviews, the geometry, the spec kits, the price, and forums like this around the world. I watched video reviews and spoke to people (including a couple of national champion riders) who all told me the same thing - the SC Tallboy is a kick-ass bike, and with the 120mm fork, far more versatile than just a pure XC bike as some people believe. One national champ told me he was actually really excited to see my bike arrive so he could check it out in detail. I hope that means he doesn't intend to put about 400kms on it before I pick it up!!!!

Anyway, this thread rocks, and not just because my bike is currently sitting on top of the heap!

I could only find 9 to lust after....
Better put a vote in, considering RD Free put a good word in... I am still lusting and hammering my AC29er after near 18 months. I have some fantastic bikes, if I could only have one bike, it would be the AC29er for sure, hands down it would be.... Was great to have Nicolai build this for me, it is now in the catalogue = Yeah ha...

few shots from the last few days riding, go the New Zealand summer...

Could be, but somehow I doubt that most folks were really making this decision in a cost-is-no-object comparison. Most people, and even most readers here, do not buy $9k bikes. I seriously doubt that even 1/4 of the poll responders even thought to try an S-Works, because for the majority, the cost is out of reach (or out of spousal permission range).

    <snip>
What I was pointing out was that if, e.g., folks are choosing bikes by price, this isn't really measuring which bikes get the highest regard irrespective of price, which was the question asked - downranking the S-Works because you can't afford it when the question was what you would take if it were free is just not answering the question, such that the survey doesn't reveal anything - folks are answering different questions. (I'd like to see how many of the TB voters would really take one over an S-Works if offered on an even trade or free basis - my guess is it's not even close to 100%.) Of course, this whole thread is pretty silly in any event since very few people have ridden all or even a majority of the bikes they've ranked...

I know I'm late to the party here, but in 2012 with two more years of R&D the bike that is obviously missing here is the Giant Anthem X 29er. I just bought one and rank it at the top. As soon as I rode it I wanted it. It's geometry seems counterintuitive with longer chainstays and steepish head angle but this bike is a great XC bike. Quick, and stable, firm but not harsh platform. Seems to me where and how you ride are really overriding criteria for which bikes you like. I have actually ridden the following:

Pivot Mach 429 ( felt like I was riding up on a horse...good climber not a great descender and rides too high in the suspension for me)
Ellsworth Evolve ( felt similar to Giant Anthem X)
Moots RSL (not full suspension, but a rocket for sure. Tendency to oversteer)
Salsa Spearfish( not as quick side to side or around corners as Giant)
