Keep Talon 2 of Go Fathom 1

Hello. I am a new member here. I appreciate the input.

I bought a 2019 Talon 2 for $500. It came with a dropper post and a 1 X 9 with 30t Raceface conversion using the front derailleur as a chain guide. I love the bike, but I want to do the conversion right 1 X 10 or even 11 and upgrade the fork. I am not sure if spending the money is worth it or if I should give the bike to my son, sell his 2017 Talon 2, and go with the Fathom 1. I know I do not need a full suspension at this point.

Check out the Salsa Timberjack. It's a nice bike and it's not a Fathom

Yeah. I checked it the Trek as well as the Cannondale Cujo. They are both 27.5+ bikes and are so heavy. My old steel frame Diamondback was not that heavy. I think I am going to pull the trigger on the Fathom.

Fathom, looks like a killer bike that is not too heavy.

I am also considering the Fathom 1 2019 which has some great specs. With the 2020 models coming out, thereís a good sale on the 2019 model at the local shop.

Before I pull the trigger on the 2019 Fathom 1, are there any red flags on this bike? Any other better alternatives in this price range ($1200-1500) from trek and specialized? Iím an average rider but I mostly care about the quality of the components and the longevity of the bike.
    Thanks for the advice.

I ended up getting a San Quentin 2 instead. The Fathom is more of a trail bike. I wanted something more hardcore. and my San Quentin is absolutely amazing. If you can get a 2019 Fathom, then do it. The 2020 spec looks to be a downgrade compared to the 2019. I am part of a group on Facebook called Hardcore Hardtails. It is a great place to check out bikes.

Were you able to sit on the San Quentin first? Iím having the same conversation with myself as you were debating.... any specific reasons the San Quentin over the others? (Beyond more hardcore). I know a lot is personal, but curious if you were able to ride it and thoughts compared to the talon or any others you tried. Thanks!

The San Quentin has 65 degree HTA and 130mm stock fork. It is not as good on the ups but insanely good on the downs. I upgraded the fork to a Bomber Z2 140mm, the brakes and rotors to SLX, added a PNW Rainier dropper, Chromag OXS bars and stem. Raceface chester pedals, and ODI grips so far. The bikes is more capable that me and I love it.
