    650b front wheel recommendations

Planning on trying a 650b front wheel on my 5 spot. Can anyone recommend a decent pre-built 650b wheel with 20mm thru axle. Don't want to spend a ton on a high end wheel until I know I like the 650b thing.

Best bet: Buy a custom built front wheel on Universal Cycles site:

    http://www.universalcycles.com/wheelkit.php

    Example for low cost parts:
Alex rim + Shimano XT M776 hub + DT Swiss Competition spokes @ $164.

Old enough to know better. And old enough not to care. Best age to be.

It all depends on what type of riding you want to use it for. Velocity Blunts are light enough. P35 are a bit stiffer. Stans Crest are lighter than blunts but i don't think as strong. Don't know where your located, but, you could configure a wheel at prowheelbuilder.com and see what price your looking at. I really like my Blunt they built for me for XC/light Trail use.

If you can handle the lack of tire options, you will like 650b. I really think this is the biggest factor holding the 650b back and why i have a 29er wheel up front. More options for either more bite or less weight (i like my Ardent and Ikons). I really like the rollover of the 650b being similar to my 29. Even more, enjoy the stiffer 650b wheel compared to a 29er.

    Aloha Tim,

I was in the same boat as you. I thought about it a while and tossed the idea around. On the one hand, what if I spent a whole ton of $$ and realized I didn't like it. On the other hand, if I cheaped it out and realized I liked it, I'd end up building myself a 2nd wheel (good one). Figured I'd just build the wheel once and if I didn't like it, I could at least part out the pieces and wouldn't be too far behind. I ended up putting together that wheel I listed in another part of the forum for about $280 shipped to Hawaii (Rim, Hub, Spokes, Nipples, Tire). - Link

I got the parts from Universal Cycles:
Hope Pro 2 EVO 20 mm Hub
    Alex XD Lite Rim
    DT Comp 274/272 mm spokes
    DT Alloy nipples
    Nevagel 2.3 Tire

I have ridden it a few times and am loving it. Works really well with my 2007 5 Spot with Magura Thor fork. I am including some pictures as well as a pdf of the actual measurements before/after of the bike. Unfortunately, the measurements weren't taken with the suspension loaded. I think I can do that later with tie downs.

    Hope this helps.
