Ugly SR Suntour Shock boots... Can I remove?

What's happening. I am rockin an early 2000's GT 26er with the cheap SR Suntour Shocks. I was wondering if I could remove the accordion style dust covers?(cut them off)

I know I will have to clean the stanchions more, but will it kill my seals?

How do I know if seals are bad?

    Thanks

Just thinking out loud, but if the seals haven't been serviced, they're likely already dead.
You didn't quit riding because you're old, you're old because you quit riding.
