Trek Liquid 2004 rear shock options

Hi all, I picked up a 2004 Trek Liquid with the carbon fibre seat stays. Plan is to be a bit of a winter project which I can then use to ride with my son on some steady trails.

Now as far as I can see the only thing which may be difficult to replace off the shelf is the rear shock. The frame came with a Manitou 3 way swinger which does hold air. I will attempt to service it and fingers crossed it will be OK. If not though Ive been considering the options.i believe the shock is a non-standard size with eye to eye of 8.25" and 2.25" stroke or 210mm x 57mm. A Google search doesn't show anything new to buy which is not unsurprising. However Fox do sizes of 210 x 55 and rockshox have 210 x 60.

Now reading between the lines here am I right to assume the fox 210 x 55 will fit but will give less travel and the rockshox 210 x 60 will give more travel?

I am no expert, but from my understanding, 60 mm would possibly lead to more travel. Possibly because the actual travel of the suspension is likely to be designed around the 57mm, and the longer stroke shock may allow the additional 3mm of movement.
We are talking about the far range of travel, and a properly setup damper really should rarely get to this point. I'd rather go long than short, and be more likely to bottom the shock with the short.
Some purists may jump in here that since the progression curve or whatever of the shock is built around 60mm, you are using it for 57mm, you aren't using the curve correctly and the bike will never ride right, you can't tune it, the sun will hide and we will enter the next ice age. It's cool. It's your kid. If they are cool riding at all, build it, love it, and there you go.
