    Shimano Deore LX M581 replacement

    I like to replace my M-581 Shimano LX that the bike came in with, I like to use a Shimano LX M592, can that be done, are the two interchangeable? Thanks.

    Should work fine, both are 9-speed... The M592 is Deore though, not LX.

    Shimano makes a lot of bike components, from very high-end to wal-mart level. They have different names for the different tiers of equipment:

    XTR (most expensive) --> XT --> SLX --> Deore --> Alivio --> Acera --> ??

    https://www.evanscycles.com/coffeest...heir-hierarchy

    I think SLX is basically the same "level" as LX would have been (between XT and Deore).

    To make matters confusing, "XT" was originally called "Deore XT" and "LX" was "Deore LX" -- but that was pretty far in the past.

    So going from LX to Deore is kind of a downgrade in "level", but you are getting the benefit of trickle-down in technology, like the Shadow derailleur style and you are replacing old with new.

    Another thing is that old standards like 9x cassettes get dropped off of the higher Shimano tiers, so the Deore that you're looking at is about the best Shimano 9-speed derailleur still available, and even it is probably old stock. (Deore is now 10-speed).
