    90's GT Avalanche Upgrade

    Hi,

Got a 92 GT Avalanche in CroMo

Lots of non original parts so don't mind upgrading

    Looking at a 1x10 or 1x11 Drivetrain

Will the rear derailleurs fit my hanger.

Asked about a shimano shadow + with clutch
as a direct mount fit on the chain reaction website and they reckon its a straight forward replacement?

    Anyone had any experience?

    Thanks in advance

As long as you have a normal freehub and not a freewheel on your rear wheel, new parts should be just fine on it. Also, direct mount often refers to a hangerless derailleur system, so don't get a direct mount derailleur unless it has the normal hanger attachment option. And, I'm assuming your usage of "direct mount" was meaning directly swap, but just wanted to make sure.

    Thanks for the reply.

Just going on the marketing blurb for the derailleur. It described as a direct mount??

You'll need a new rear wheel or hub. That bike is 7 speed, and that used a different free hub standard than 8/9/10/11 does.

Everything else should be fine (drivetrain wise).

Can you post a link to the specific one you're looking at?

Shimano derailleurs (in retail boxing) are regular and direct mount compatible. if you managed to get one that was only direct mount, you can buy the little link to make it fit regular hangers.

Curiously, the new 12 speed is NOT direct mount. I guess they gave up on it.

That link wont work except in europe cause shimano wants us to pay more over here...

That's the standard setup for most shimano derailleurs. The little upper link is for standard hangers. You remove it for direct mount hangers.

That's great. Thanks for posting that.

Looks like I'm on a shopping spree then

Hope to post up progress on the build.

Does anyone think if going 10 speed may as well go 11? Read a few stories it's a bit more difficult to set up and get the chainline and indexing right with 11

11 was a fail. 10 shifts much nicer and more reliably. 11 is super finicky. If your hanger is even slightly out, it will skip. Shimano's chains for 11 are also garbage so you'll want to use sram, which then doesn't shift quite as nice on top of the finickiness. In short, stick with 10 :P

I just built a (new) avalanche with 12 speed SLX. Main downside to 12 is you need the new hub.

You can do a 11 sp derailleur and a 10 speed shifter with a wide range 10 sp cassette like the sunrace ones. The 11 sp derailleurs handle larger cassettes better than 10's IME since 10's were transitioning from 2x10 while 11 was generally designed for 1x.

Think will stick with the 10 then. Though like the idea of the 11 speed derailleur. Will sleep on it 🤔
