26 build help for an MTB newbie

Roadie here looking to get into MTB.

I was given a full 26 bike with good components, wheels, shocks, etc but the carbon frame is cracked. I have found locally a guy selling a Yeti 575 (2013) frame that I am thinking of buying and building up with the components I have. My concern is with the shock I have and whether its compatible with the frame. Its a Fox RL from 08 or 09, not sure. The fork does not look "tapered" so unsure if it will fit with the frame. So I guess the question is whether I can use a non tapered fork with this type of frame or do I need to use another fork or get a different frame?

    thanks for the guidance.

If the fork you have is tapered it will fit right in, if it is a straight tube steerer it will still fit with the proper headset. Several companies, most notably Cane Creek make headsets fo straight tube steerers into tapered headtube bikes. You just want to make sure your current steerer tube is long enough to fit through the Yeti's headtube. What type of carbon frame do you currently have?

Thanks! the current fork is straight so I guess I need to find a new headset.

The current frame is a Tomac Carbide.

There will be bits and pieces you'll need to change but most of your stuff should fit. The fork will fit with the correct headset and adapter.

Shocks vary in stroke length, overall length and usually in their settings too. You'll need to check the spec of the shock for both frames. Worse case, you eBay your shock and buy another one.

But you will make this work.

It depends on the headset. Many include an adapter (plastic ring!) that lets you use them with both tapered and straight forks.
