    2005 Trek 3700

    Hi everyone,
Iím breaking into the MTB world. Iím a roadie but have lost my spark for riding pavement.

Iíve been looking at the new and used market and am struggling to figure out what I want. Iíd like to stay under $500 as a first foray.

I could pickup a 2016 Marlin 5 for $250 which seems reasonable except that it gets so-so reviews; single wall wheels, cable brakes, cheap fork.

All this could be upgraded over time.

Then I spied a Trek 3700 in mint condition for $100.

My tinkering side says go with the Trek 3700 and upgrade it with used parts.

My gut says going with the 3700 is flawed logic because even after I do all the work to upgrade itís still a 13 year old bike.

Hmmm I think I just answered my own question.

If the 3700 is in good working order, why not for $100? Yes, you can have more fun on a new $3000 bike, but 30X more fun? No.

I wouldn't dump a lot of money upgrading it, but if you want something to get going this season, it should do.

    Thanks Brian,
It's very easy to get lured into the world of fancy bikes. My budget just won't allow that though so you raise a good point.
