575-Smoother Shifting, route derailer cable through stay or under canvas chainguard?

I had a friend tell me that running the cable under the canvas guard instead of through the stay will reduce the degree of cable bends and shift smoother. Any truth to this?

I'd think just the opposite, unless you were running an older, non-shadow shimano derailleur that has the big loop of housing.

of course this is just internet engineering based on pictures, but it sure looks to me like you'd have a more severe bend as you came off the stay.
