i think im the only MTBer that uses a pro-tec helmet. my gf was telling me it was time for a new helmet, and i went right back to looking for a new pro-tec! ive seen some pretty sweet helmets made by bell lately and they are too expensive either.

Echelon $60

It is tough to beat the Specialized Echelon for fit/weight and price. At $60, it is a no-brainer imo..

Specialized helmets have always fit me well (Giro does not) and I've enjoyed S-works in the past few years.

New helmets this year, however: Garneau's Diamond and Quartz. I am a convert. These are light, cool, cheaper, and give the best fit yet --for my head.

I used to use ~$50 Bell helmets like the Yukon FS. I was pretty happy with it.

BUT

Then I tried on the Giro Ionos at the LBS. The fit was much better. I debated for quite a while. I finally gave in and purchased it. My employee discount made the price less insane. Upon riding with it, I noticed the ventilation was also noticeably better.

I've tried on some helmets that just did not fit right. Shopping for helmets online will not tell you much. A good fit is what will affect your enjoyment the most.

Love my Bell volt

As mentioned above. Seems like certain brands match certain head shapes.

Giros seem to fit rounder profile heads and Bells seem to fit more Oblong headshapes like my own. Important to try before you buy.

Love my Bell volt. Light, well vented and I can pop the visor on for MTB and off for roadiness.

I wear a full on dedicated road helmet. It's made by Louis Garneau and retails around 100 dollars. I think it's the versa. Anyways, it fits great and it has fantastic ventilation.
