With many bikes being spec'd with 360 gram 10sp cassettes such as the PG 1050 or 1070, are you keeping them on for racing or do they get immediately relegated to training wheels (if you have training wheels).
I know this could be asked in the weight weenies or drivetrain section, but from a racing vs training perspective what happens to your perfectly shifting cassette that just happens to weigh upwards of 90 to 100 grams more than a XTR-level cassette but costs $50 vs $190.
I use the 1070 that came on my bike for training on the stock wheels. I bought an XT cassette for my race wheel, I thought it was a better value compared to the XTR.
You dont want to replace your chain in a timely manner to save your cassette and rings?
Im kinda opposite on my SS setup. My nice homebrewed 2 peice cog is on the training wheels and a cheap surly is on my race wheels. Never weighed either
Chains are cheap and easy to replace compared to your cassette and chainrings. I check my chain often and replace it when it gets close to .75 for the past year. I find that I never break chains anymore and the shift always works great. Ponch - it is worth taking the time to check your chain often!
The boat anchor of a cassette (Shimano HG50, 450 grams) that came with my bike still does fine duty for riding the trainer in the winter. I'm only running 1x9, so the PG990 (300g) will go on when I need my mud tires set up for a race.
I have an XX cassette on my 26 race wheelset...an XT on my "fun" 26 wheelset and honestly don't have any idea what my other bike has...at 22.5lbs, my guess is a stock 29er doesn't need much upgrading...or at least until my piggybank gets fat again and the urge to spend money on my bikes hits me...
Hi, My training wheelset has a pg950 cassette and run a Shimano Hg53 chain , The race wheels has a pg990 cassette and runs a KMC x9 sl gold chain, the wheels by themselves differ about a pound or so
I run the same XT cassette on both race and fun wheels. It takes me a few seconds to swap over the cassette and then I don't have to worry about the chain not meshing with a different cassette.
