Anyone else notice the training zone differences between the two books?
I worked with TCTP last year. This year I'm cat1 and want to do better in marathon. It took me by surprise how far different the training zone are. I know Carmichael is focused on high intensity but it seems like the zones should match more closely because the zones should match our metabolic systems.
Friel (% of LTHR)
z1: 65-81%
z2: 82-88%
z3: 89-93% (EM through steady state in here)
z4: 94-100% (CR to power interval here)
z5a: 101-102% (power interval all of zone 5)
z5b: 103-105%
z5c: 106% +
Carmichael's Training Intensities: (in percentage of 8x2 avg heart rate)
EM: 50-91%
Tempo: 88-90%
Steady State: 92-94%
Climbing Repeat: 95-97%
Power Interval: 100+
All that said, I'm trying to figure out one good clearly defined test to establish LTHR and corresponding zones. Friels bible has a long list of tests and pretty vague indicators to measure the results.
