    Training effect(s) of split-session riding?

I work at a hospital 3 days per week. The last couple months, I've been commuting to work one or two times a week. Total ride time to and from work is about 02:10:00 for the day.

Not in any real hurry to get to work as a sweaty mess, so it's Zone 1 & 2. Coming home, it's a pretty consistent Zone 2 ride with possibly some intervals depending on how I feel. I'm just enjoying being on the bike.

The to and from commuting rides are separated by 12+ hrs. How is the training effect different (if at all) between my commute ride and the times when I can actually ride the same 02:10:00 hrs. without, say, stopping?

    Hope this makes sense.

I would say what you're doing is excellent.

Bike commuting saves time, energy, and money. Also, having a purpose for the ride home (i.e., working on a weakness: AC, sprinting, VOmax, threshold, leg speed, etc.) is excellent as well. I bike commute home a few times a week, and I always work on something (even recovery).

Having one continous long ride a week (2-3 hours) is probably all you'll need for endurance purposes, depending on your racing focus.

I'll see if I can hack it maybe 1 day a week through the winter. I'll see. I get sleepy when it starts getting dark! I doubt I'll want to commute when it's 15 degrees out at 4:30am either

But the point is to have some fun on the bike and to build a good base going into spring. I'd like to try and contest my XC class for the '12 season.
