Short track for first real race?

Wondering what peoples thoughts are regarding type of race for first real mtb race. There is a short track race coming up and I am thinking it might be a good start. Track is 1000meters and you ride as much as you can in 45 minutes....seems simple enough concept.
i have been riding for years but never a real race. Does this seem like a good first, or would you recommend a race with a defined distance? Thamks

I'd recommend a race with defined distance. Short track races are usually super fast redline heartrate efforts. They're intense.

It depends on your style. I have always liked the STXC format but you have to be ready to go all out the whole time. Very face to face style, mechanicals or flats mean game over. Do they have a shorter category? Most here have a 30min or 25min category for a little less shock. Be sure to have tires with good cornering tread as your corners will be hard and fast.

The pro's of doing a conventional XC are that you are more spread out and paced, as well as you know where you are based on the mileage. More time to deal with issues if they arise(like tires), but less chance to abort if something more major comes up. Each has its points, and you will have to try to find out which is your preference but that is the fun

I say go for it. What have you got to lose? You know how to ride, and no doubt youve ridden for 45 minutes before....

I started racing this year and started with a dirt crit series. Its 8 weeks, one race each week. I'm riding the cat 3 and it's a 25 minute race. And yes it is 25 minutes of all out effort, but its a blast. I say go for it.

Thanks for all of the thoughts, i know its just a cat3 race, and it is no big deal, I was just curious what people thought would be a better first race experience. Im sure I will just pick one and go after it....
I should go watch a short track first, havent seen one in person.

The best experience is any experience you can get. Don't watch, just do it. Going to watch is a waste of time iMO. I coach high school kids. They race and do just fine. You'll do fine as well.
