Just saw that come up on Twitter. Burry was probably my favorite pro XC rider.

It's kind of rainy here and I was about to head out for a ride on the road. Think I might hop on the trainer instead. And reflect.

    Puxa!
    I just can't believe this.
Less than one month ago, Lejarreta, today, Stander.
Is this a curse or what? How long will cyclist be like moving targets for murderers hiding behind the steering wheel?
I can't explain how bad I'm feeling with all this. I've been seeing Burry for so long, that it feels like if one of my friend had been killed.
RIP Burry, and all my thoughts and support to his family and friends, they need to feel all support possible.

Holy cr@p. I hadn't checked twitter all day... This is awful.

"Burry, who was the most successful mountain bike cyclist the country has ever seen, and whose promising career has been abruptly cut short, was a true icon and sporting role model," read the Cycling South Africa statement. "Not only is this a loss to South African sport, but we have lost a true gentleman who through his professionalism, modesty and humility, constantly showing sheer guts, represented our country with great pride."

I never met him, but I've heard some of his post race interviews and he was a true professional, and a great ambassador for the sport. He will be sorely missed.

Gosh, it is going to feel like there is a hole in the line up at next year's world cups without Burry there. So sad. He kept getting better and better too.

I've spent the evening going through my photos looking for pics of Burry. I think this is the best one; Sea Otter, 2010. I think this is his second year with Specialized, and the first year he was on a 29er. He out-sprinted Geoff Kabush for the win.

More details, he was riding with his dad. More Details Emerge In Stander's Fatal Accident | Cyclingnews.com

"No parent should ever have to see his child lying on a tarred road after an accident, knowing that there is absolutely nothing he can do to save his life," said Charles Stander, father of Burry. "It is definitely the worst moment of my life. Words cannot even begin to describe how one feels when it happens. It was terrible."

Burry Stander was out on a training ride in Shelly Beach, on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast on January 3, when he was hit by a taxi. Apparently the driver did not see Stander when he made a turn. Stander died on the scene.

Colonel Jay Naicker, a spokesperson for the police, confirmed that a docket for culpable homicide was opened.

Italian MTB XC and cyclocross champ Marco Fontana took a strong and surprising 3rd place today in the World Cup CX in Rome. Riding across the finish line he saluted the Burry Stander badge he was wearing on his chest. Thanks for the respect Marco. RIP Burry
