Help me work on a weakness.

I race cat 2 and have done pretty well this year. But today, I was in first after about 2 miles, and held it for 80% of the race and then I started to fade pretty fast after about 1:05 mins and got second. I held a pretty steady pace and felt great the first hour, only reaching my max HR on short burst up hill and when making a pass. What kind of workouts can I do to increase my endurance so
I can last the whole race. Longer intervals, short intervals??? A little back ground on my current workout plan. I ride to work 1hr and home 1hr twice a week, intervals for 1hr twice a week and a 2-3 hour ride twice a week.

Sounds like you do plenty of volume for Sport class racing. The only thing anyone could question is the quality of that volume. The only real mistake that could be made in endurance rides is starting too hard, wrecking your legs, thus resulting in low finishing power and resultant work.

Could be that the guy who beat you is just an unusually good finisher. I will agree that it is rare for placings to change within a sport race (from the half hour point on), but it does happen.

I don't really have a good idea what I'm doing yet when it comes to training. But I wear a HR monitor and my rides to work are either endurance rides or recovery, based on how my legs feel. Intervals are anywhere from 6-8 mins with 3 min recovery or pyramid intervals. I will also do shorter 1x1 or 30x30sec during the race week or recovery week. The more I think about it, I will probably improve over the season if I keep it up.

Tempo work looks like what you might be lacking, per what you posted.

Here's a real good article on Tempo Training:
