    Alternatives to medals?

So... what do you do with your podium medals?

Personally, I wish race promoters would do away with medals and hand out something useful... so when I use it, I'm reminded of the effort I put into earning it

Kudo's to the promoters that have handed out these "medals" to those on the podiums I've been on:
    - custom pint glasses
    - custom socks
    - custom head set cap with race engraved on it
    - handcuffs (!)

    I also wouldn't mind a race credit/discount to a future race

What unique "medals" have you seen?

the leg at Ray's Indoor Invitation XC TT was pretty sweet.

the granite plaques that are given out every year at the Idyllwild Spring Challenge are cool decorations for a garden (when i have one some day)

i like the creative steel pieces that have been given out lately as well, but i guess they are still "medals". Allison's "Queen of the Mountain" wall piece from Idyllwild Spring Challenge is really creative and most people don't know what it even is but it replaced the clock that is in our kitchen.

on your list i have pint glasses from Keyesville (and D-ville too i think), socks (D-ville), and a couple headset caps (Sea Otter). i also have custom engraved grips for winning at the Fontana National. all good prizes for sure!

High quality pint glass with finish/venue etched in it would be sweet azz. I agree that the use of funds could be better allocated for more useful prizes.

Having trophies that are identical (from an unmentioned series) is odd too. What do I do with them...line 'em up on the mantle??

We can brainstorm, and maybe organizers will see.

Medals around here are probably $3-5 each. Mass produced with a race name on a sticker on the back. The design remains the same for every race, but the ribbon colors vary.

So now, what kind of bike related thing would be useful, but also work for all (29, 26, canti, disc, FS Rigid, tube, tubeless, etc.)?

We get medals and a prize. Pro and Cat1 usually cash. The value of the medals wouldn't even buy a tube.
A lot of times around here the first year of a race the first *whatever* number of racers to register get a pint glass. Some races will continue it, most won't.
One race here gives t-shirts out first come first serve, so usually 95% them go to the beginners, which is good.

At the 12 Miles of Hell the overall winner got a trpohy made like a tombstone out of the pink granite that was all over the course. It usually took two guys to haul the rock away from the awards. Lesser catagories got smaller rocks with bronze plaques telling place and catagories.

I hate to dissent, but I for one am sick of getting pint glasses from any bike races. Sorry, they seem like a cheap POS thing to give as an award. Most custom pint glasses cost less than $2 and lack any originalality.

Dville gives out the socks and pint glasses as swag... but winners do get a nice WTB saddle with "Downieville Classic" written on it. Lots of races give out t-shirts to the first XX registrants... so that's swag too. I'm talking awards.

I'm kinda over the pint glasses too... I have so many (not just from racing), but at least I use 'em.

Here's a pic of a some of the things I've won, in addition to some of the stupid medals. The bathroom tile with the medal glued on is hilarious! I thought it would be a good beer coaster, but the medal is just thick enough that beverages have tumbled.

If you have photos of the cool artsy-fartsy awards, post 'em up!

Unravel the Scratchgravel just started with a pickaxe for Cat1 mens 1st and a shovel for Cat1 ladies 1st. It is homage to the heavy mining in the area from a century ago.

The Rolling Thunder cyclocross race in Missoula gives a big axe (Axe of Thunder or something) for the winner.
Just to branch out, the pro road race Tirreno Adriatico has the best GC winner's trophy!

Allison collected a lot of awards at last year's Idyllwild Spring Challenge. Some of the best awards we have laying around the house for sure....

Queen of the mountain (and 1st place XC medal)

    Giant checks are always nice!

The overall winners for the stage race get the Granite!

All I am hearing is that you want more.

All I hear is that race producers need more volunteers.

    Excellent!!

I used to b$tch and complain about races (not that the OP is complaining), until I helped run registration at one.

I don't think the OP is *****ing and complaining, either.

By the way, does anyone besides me think that Empty_Beer needs to move up a category?

    Pint class would collect dust.
Saddle too personal of a choice if you are going to actually use it.
Socks too much of a personal choice and would find the back of the drawers.
Jersey, maybe, not sure. I don't go for the 'loud' jerseys.
    Please no more water bottles.

Unique medals would be nice like chain ring design, etc.

Are you kidding? You can never have too many socks...well I can't.

Jerseys are expensive. We used to get series leader jerseys at each race, now it's at the end of the season.

Water bottles are useful...especially when they are full of cash!

Probably the most unique trophy I ever got was a hand grenade.

I did a state series race Sunday and got a 19t steel cog from a local custom cog guy that he donated as swag for the ss podium winners. It's really nice cnc'd and wide base, just too bad cause I roll a threaded freewheel hub but definitely appreciated the jester no the less.

I like when promoters give out things that I would actually use to ride with instead of trophies or medals.

Sorry guys, but this was the best prize ever.

They did it for select groups at the 2006 Desert Rampage in St. George, Utah (just a local series race). My wife and I use this bag like crazy. They haven't had prizes this good since, IMO. But then again, I haven't placed much since then either. (Ahhhhh, memories of Sport class. )

For winning my overall season (10 race) cyclocross race series category (singlespeed) i got a sweet custom jersey that says something to the effect of "2010 Overall Champion blah blah blah" on the back. Definitely unique and something worth racing for.

At one of the individual races in the above mentioned series, 1st place got 4 bottles of wine. 2nd place got 3 bottles and 3rd place got two. It helped that the race venue was on the winery grounds. Definitely awesome to win those!

All the medals and plaques that i've won are gathering dust on a hook or on a shelf in a dark and lonely corner of the garage. However, it is nice win the medals have your category and placing printed on them rather than just a generic blank one.
