2014 World cup - Cairns Australia

Damn I love living here!, 15 minutes from some of the best trails in Australia and now they go a build a World Cup XCO, XCE and Downhill venue just down the road...
AND it opens to the public tomorrow!

THIS TIME ITS OFFICIAL, SMITHIES IS OPEN! FINALLY JUST WHAT YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!

Commencing from Saturday the 7th of December we shall be opening the trails. We ask that you follow the bunting and stay away from the hard workers who are building the Downhill bridge and also please stay off the event site. That said feel free to ride the new XC trails they need to be bedded in. You won't be disappointed.

Craig will be out in the morning putting up warning signs on the cross country on sections that are for experienced riders. Please think twice before committing to some sections.

The downhill road is still closed as is the downhill track. When we can open it we will advise. The club is keen to run open days on the DH track as soon as we can get access.

For the open gate days you will need to be a club member of a club and either hold an MTBA race license or purchase a day permit to ride it. So if you have not updated your membership or race license for next year get in and get it done as riding the DH will require both for insurance purposes.

This has been a direction from National Parks as this is a UCI level DH course.

If you are pushing up and riding the course you have been warned the club will not be held liable for your injuries.

MTBA has very good rider insurance and well worth the money and will cover you in the event you have an unfortunate moment.

It feels like it has been forever but finally we can ride Smithfield. Over the next twelve months we will turn it into a fully functioning MTB park. It will draw many a MTB adventurer to the North so they can experience Smithfield, Mt Baldy and Davies Creek and everywhere in between. It is a good time to be a MTBiker in FNQ.

Thanks to Glen and the World Trail Crew for their masterful work on the trails, TTNQ, Cycling Australia, Events Qld, National Parks and the Qld Govt (yes they actually gave us something cool), The Cairns Regional Council who have been the back bone of the bid and the event build and all the club members for thier support and patience.

    Now go ride!!.

    The Committee,
    Cairns Mtb Club

Speaking as a European living in a country with relatively terrible weather all year round, I'd love to visit Cairns. Problem would be that I wouldn't want to leave.
