A "real" Dirt Chicks story (personal opinion only)

Apparently the original "Dirt Chicks" was probably the small family-oriented ATV/MX club who had the web site www.dirtchicks.com as early as August 2003. About a year later (16-Sep-04), the www.dirtchicksclothingcompany.com domain name was registered by the clothing company. I cannot confirm this personally, but I *hear* the clothing company actually sent cease and desist letters to the original DirtChicks group ordering them to stop using their own name. See this DirtChicks.com page mentioning the conflict from 3/24/05 on the web site archive: http://web.archive.org/web/20050324215956/http://www.dirtchicks.com/index.html

Due to serious illness and death in the family, the DirtChicks.com club eventually stopped maintaining their web site and let their domain name registration expire, which was scooped up by an x-rated site.

A trade mark has to be registered with the gov't, it is not automatically created by use. So, if the second group had registered the trademark, they legally could protect it. That is how these things work. If it's not registered with US Patent and Trademark Office, it's not registered. Maybe used by someone but not registered. Domain names are a seperate issue: it's like only $10 a year to keep a domain name registered, surely someone could have coughed it up?

Unfortunately we live in a world where "he who can pay the lawyers" usually wins; that doesn't make it right. Not everyone cares about the karma of their actions. But also, many organizations don't take the trouble to trademark logos and names - it can be costly and time consuming.

I am more interested in why guys like to come into the women's lounge to complain about stuff, try to get rise out of us. (success!!)

I have this picture in my head of these eager little dudes, waiting until they finally find something (anything!) that they can post in the WL, hoping against hope that no one will call them on their thin excuse for garnering the attention of the forum's population. Reloading the forum page with tense anticipation to see if this time is the one where we all realize their perfect understanding of our wants and needs and PM them with our phone numbers.

I wonder if they know how many of us are actually balding, middle-aged men (isn't that the case with most of the internet? ;-).

With the name 1000 oaks, I think the OP must know the dirtchix group in real life, many of whom ride in thousand oaks in socal, and some of whom are on this forum.

Sucks that they are messing with you guys.

Chuky, I think you need a nap. ;)

This is one of the few sights that gives reliable OPINIONS without flaming (usually), no Id hit it BS, has interesting articles written by people that love their bikes and yes I will agree, adds a nice flavor to Mt. biking. Yes this is my opinion as a MAN with four daughters. Thank you to all the ladies who can and do hold interesting intelligent conversations.

Edited to remove finger wagging.

1000 oaks do you or did you know any of the great ladies from the original DirtChicks?

My wife is too busy making my supper to surf the web. :D
(you were baiting me, right?)

Seriously, my wife just doesn't like spending time on internet forums but I'm visit hear to learn things and to solve problems for my favorite riding buddy that she won't do for herself.

Commonly done as a means of extortion. Scumbags, usually but not always, in Asia, Balkans, Russia, etc. have bulk domain registration accounts that allow them to register domain names for pennies or less. They put very low bids on domain names that are expiring. If not reregistered by the actual owner, the extortionist registers them and typically links them to a porn site. When the real owners try to get it back, the extortionists will offer to sell it back for hundreds or thousands of dollars. There is a process for the rightful owners to recover it but it's time consuming and when you're losing business and alienating established customers who are offended by your porn site, the victims frequently pay off the thieves.

If you own a domain name DO NOT LET IT EXPIRE unless you're sure you'll never, never need it again.

And don't mind all your former web visitors thinking you're now a pornographer.
