Happy (early) Birthday to my wife!

She lurks here a decent bit regularly, so I'm sure she'll find this.

With her birthday coming up, I was trying to think of what to get her. She had expressed interest in some Shredly shorts after reading about them here, so I had my eye on some and was almost ready to purchase a pair when she had me looking at a bike in an ad in the classifieds. We've been talking about a bike for her, but mostly casually. She's next up for a new bike, so we've been talking some things over and doing a few test rides here and there so she could start to pin down what she wanted in her next bike, probably in late winter/spring.

The bike in the classifieds was a VERY nice bike at a very good price. I encouraged her to think on it for a few days to avoid making an impulse purchase. We asked the seller some detailed questions, asked for some specific pictures, and did some research. Everything was answered to our satisfaction so yesterday we sent the money over for the bike. It was in the price range we intended to spend for a new bike, but being used, she managed to get a LOT more bike for the money.

It's a 2010 Santa Cruz Blur XC carbon with XTR drivetrain and brakes, Fox Float RLC fork, Fox Float RP23 shock, DT Tricon wheelset.

Best of all, even though it's a "small" and in the same size category of her current bike, it's got a slightly shorter ETT than her current bike, which gives us a little more room to get the fit pegged for her (she has short arms, so short reach is important for her). She should be on this bike in time for the Brown County Breakdown bike fest at the end of the month, so she's pretty stoked.

She'll be upgrading from a 2004 Specialized Rockhopper Women's entry level bike. For now, she'll be keeping the old Rockhopper. Possibly putting a rigid fork on it, with some slicks and using it as an errand/bike path bike.

Happy (early) Birthday to my wife!

Ordered a matching set of purple blackspire sub4 pedals to accompany the purple cane creek 110 headset and purple grip clamps. The wife approved.

She really has no desire to learn clipless and I have been talking about getting her some quality platforms. Seemed the right time.

Happy (early) Birthday to my wife!

It took my wife a long time to get hooked. After getting the bike she kinda liked riding for awhile until we moved somewhere that the trails were above her fitness level. And mine to some extent. And they weren't all that fun.

We recently moved somewhere that even the physically demanding trails are extremely fun for her so she has incentive to push herself harder than before and her skill and bike fitness have been progressing a lot this year.

I dragged her kicking and screaming into running which she actually wound up enjoying at the time. Now biking is far more fun for her and she splits time between yoga and riding.

I have run up to half marathons with her but I much prefer shorter distances...5k's mostly. I think she is even fed up with half marathons.

Happy (early) Birthday to my wife!

Bike should be here Friday. The pedals have shipped but no ETA yet. Maybe not till next week unless they were shipped priority. Might have to install some cheap platforms so she can ride it over the weekend. Weather is supposed to be awesome.

There are downsides. Like the bike maintenance fund getting stretched, or arguing over who gets the next bike, or trying to figure out where you're going next weekend.

I recently offered to trade husby sex for a fat bike straight across. He just laughed at me.... *sigh*. Had to try it, but I'm afraid after nearly 20 years of marriage he knows me too well, lol.

Hilarious. We've been having the "where to go" discussions lately. I think we've got our next 3 weekends booked up with bike stuff.

I want my next bike to be fat. I have a XC FS bike, a road/touring/commute bike (in pieces currently), and a fattie would fit so perfectly in between.

FedEx came by to deliver the bike right as the Mrs. was heading down the stairs to go to work. I let her unbox it and get the first looks/touches before she left. I finished the unpacking and building after she left.

I took pictures of the progress.

Here it is, peeking out of the box.

Now that it's assembled, it's off to the bike shop for a few supplies and a thorough cleaning.

The coolest thing about this is that you seem to get as much enjoyment out of getting this for her as she's going to get riding it. Good on both of you, & congrats on such a fantastic upgrade.

I'm just happy that she's becoming more passionate about riding. I also know that if she gets something really nice, that I will, too, when we can afford it.

Here are a couple shots of her tearing it up on the new bike at Brown County State Park today.

On a skinny she'd never have ridden before. Nailed it.
