Buying first mtn bike for 5' 1" wife- $600-$800 range?

Shopping for my wife's first mountain bike. She currently rides a 7 speed Electra Townie, but I want her to be able to ride dirt trails with me. I'm going to get a chariot baby trailer for my Cannondale Rush 4SL and she can follow along on her bike.

I'm thinking a nice disc brake hard tail with platform pedals until she gets used to riding. In the future we'll get a babysitter and teach her to ride singletrack. But for now, dirt/gravel/paved bike paths are in our future.

I'm looking seriously at the Specialized Myka sport disc or elite (the elite is on sale so only $200 difference) in the 13" frame size.

    Is there a comparable trek?

    Any other recommendations?

Don't know about Trek but the Myka line is a great choice.

My rule is to buy the best bike you can afford. That said, I like. the Myka Elite, with lighter frame, hydraulic disc brakes, next level up of derailleurs, and other small touches. While your wife may or may not notice these features, that in itself is a value. It makes the bike more deft and supple and pleasant to ride.

It will also carry her a long way. The frame is worthy of upgrades if she turns gnarly on you; it has been known to happen. As it is, it has worked very well for two seasons under one of my racers.

Here's to hoping you get stuck on baby-sitting duty while momma goes out and hammers.
    I don't rattle.

Thanks for the remarks. After test riding today she picked the Myka 13" elite. The Trek was a 14" frame with too heigh of a stand over height.

Can't wait until next weekend to break it in with her.

Look into the Fuji Addy 2.0. Test ride one to see if it fits the bill, but the standover on most of Fujis Altair2 frames is very generous as they are measured to the top of the seat collar.
