For the most part. . .yes. A build kit is cheaper than a fully built bike. I've priced out a few, and priced out the components, and with the groups, they are a better deal. Try this website for build kits too:
They've had some of the best prices I could find with build kits. I've ordered from them in the past as well, and they were OK. Not excellent, as they didn't have some stuff in the build kit in stock, and swapped out parts, and ended up charging me a higher price, but in the end they gave me a lot better parts for not that much more.
I mean for $500 for an LX kit with Disc brakes, you are not going to find a better deal than that.
Pricepoint has an XT/LX build kit with XT STI combo levers and Avid disk brakes for 720. I like it has the old style disc mounts!
