    Just a heads Up:

    REI revises its return policies
    Published June 6, 2013
    by BRAIN Staff

KENT, WA (BRAIN) — Outdoor equipment retailer REI recently announced changes to its return policies, which previously allowed customers to return any item for any amount of time, no questions asked.

The new policy states that items can only be returned within one year of purchase, and that items damaged by the customer during ordinary or improper use will not be covered. Items purchased at the online outlet store, REI.com/outlet, have to be returned within 30 days from the date of purchase.

The changes come after REI reported that, while sales were up 7 percent to $1.9 billion, profits dropped 4 percent in 2012. Analyzing sales numbers, the retailer noticed a spike in returns made for merchandise purchased more than one year ago. The rise in such returns caused REI to reconsider their current policies.

“We’ve always taken back products more than a year old, but to see that growing disproportionately caused us to ask some questions,” said Tim Spangler, REI’s senior vice president of retail, in an interview with The Seattle Times. “What we found is that the small group of folks who are probably extending the policy beyond its intent is getting bigger. And it’s not a sustainable thing long-term if we want to maintain this fantastic policy,” he said in the interview. “It’s something we have to put some clarification around.”

You can thank those that abused the policy.

REI limiting returns for these reasons.

I went to one of the garage sales at REI and found a pair of shoes that were completely worn out. Original purchase date was 4 years prior. Shoes returned because they were worn. Well no **** shoes will wear out if you wear them enough over a 4 year period. It's that kinda crap that ruined a fantastic policy for returns.

Until they change their policy too... which I've heard is like to happen soon.

Agreed, all it takes is a quick look at the returns section in any local REI to see way too many people were abusing the policy.

Some people have no shame- return shoes after 4 years? .... And most likely by a guy who could most afford to own them, like a lawyer.

Uhh... no. I worked at REI for four years. Most people who obviously abused the policy were either unscrupulous parents with kids stuff (whatever their profession happened to be) and "dirtbag"-type climbers and hikers who wore through climbing shoes and hiking boots and then returned them claiming dissatisfaction.

You get sued lately, or something?

Ummm I didn't even know about this return policy with REI. Their pricing usually isn't very competitive so I don't purchase anything from them.
