    Employee Discount?

So, from what I've always been told, bike shop EE's get bikes & gear at cost, correct? Is this an industry wide standard or would it vary from one brand to the next?

There are two types of discounts - the ones that bike shops offer to employees, and the type that manufacturers offer to bike shop employees.

The shop discount varies widely based on the particular shop - it can be as little as just 20% off MSRP or as much as dealer cost.

Manufacturers often offer discounts to employees via "employee purchase" programs that are a much better deal for the employee. Typically parts are priced at a cost 10-20% below wholesale. The transaction is usually between just the employee and the manufacturer and the shop only gets involved to sign the form acknowledging that said employee works in their shop.

Back in the day when I worked at an outdoor shop from some vendors we would get a 1 time a year 'pro deal' on an item, 35% off wholesale. It was used to buy ice axes or tents, large items.
