Sorry, this is a dumb question but Amazon's website is cryptic on this point and I can't find the answer elsewhere despite a fair bit of searching.
I know you can return unused items to Amazon within 30 days, but can you return obviously used items, like you can with REI or hucknroll? I'm thinking about some XTR pedals but don't want to be stuck if I don't think they're worth it.
IMO - one of the benefits of REI or Performance is the return policy, and it is built into their price. If you are going to utilize this, pony up. If you want the best price, know that you dont get a 1 year trial period included in the price.
You could also hit up a bike shop and check with them. They may have some loaner SPD you could try.
Lastly, its not cryptic. They dont address it because they dont want used items returned. You can sell your own used items on ebay though. Take care of em, and you wont lose very much cash.
If "they don't address it" (and they don't) how is it "not cryptic"?
Most retailers say returns must be in new and unused condition. Others, by contrast, say things like "unconditional satisfaction guaranteed" or whatever. Amazon just says items are "easily returned." They also say that specific items--swimsuits and underwear--can only be returned if unworn and "provided that it is in its original condition with all tags and packaging intact." The fact that those limitations are applied only to bathing suits and undies suggests that they don't apply to any other sports and outdoor items. It sounds like you think Amazon will accept used cycling items within 30 days, but they don't publicize it because they don't want a lot of people to do it. Maybe so.
Anyway. I'm still interested in hearing something more definitive about whether Amazon will accept returns of cycling items that have been used.
Seems like it is up to the store you are buying it from.
Of course, you could always just contact them and ask, since you want a definitive answer, instead of going on a unrelated web site to see if someone else has tried to use their return policy on a used item.
Of course, the simple solution would be to just have a Performance bike shop price match it, or order it from Nashbar for $10 bucks more, and get a known warranty.
Returning the item to Amazon is the easy part, getting a credit back for your purchase is an entirely different matter.
I think it is going to depend on how used is 'used'.
If you slapped the pedals on your bike and rode around the block and hate the pedals you should be able to return the pedals for a refund.
If you slapped the pedals on your bike and barrel down a trail or trails you might be able to return the pedals but you won't get a refund from Amazon as they cannot resell the item if the item is beaten up/been used, etc.
If you slapped the pedals on your bike and they fell apart on a trail you will be able to get warranty from Shimano (provided that the issue was a manufacturing defect and not from hucking, normal wear and tear, etc).
The second scenario seems to be what you are hinting at and something like ebay, pinkbike, craigslist, etc would be your recourse in that situation.
Just like a car:
Drive the car around the block (before purchase) - not on the hook
Purchase the car and drive for 30 days (or even a couple of days) - on the hook
Car falls apart during normal use - may or may not be on the hook
I've returned a few things to amazon, as long as the item is sold by amazon, not a store on amazon, you can usually return it. Its all done through an automated step by step wizard, you get your rma number at the end of the wizard thing, takes a couple minutes. I've returned stuff that had nothing wrong with it, but you just pick a reason why your returning it, and if you pick that its defective, you can choose if you want a refund or a replacement, and amazon will pay for return shipping, I've done it several times. they aren't going to slap your pedals on a bike to make sure you were telling the truth. I've bought a lot of stuff from amazon that I havn't returned, I try and buy everything I can from them, even if its a little extra money, cause I know their return policy is the best.
try a set from rei or Nashbar-unconditional return policy-if you like them or not, return them, then pick-up the less costly ones from Amazon if they are what your seeking. 30days at Amazon-Sports and Outdoors equipment purchased from Amazon.com and most sellers are easily returned within 30 days of receipt of shipment. For Amazon.com returns, and returns of items purchased from a sellers but fulfilled by Amazon, please visit our Online Returns Center to initiate a return. For returns of all other items purchased from a seller, please contact the seller directly by going to "Your Orders" in Your Account. Then click the "Contact Seller" button on the order you're interested in returning. To view the seller's return policy, click the "Return items" button on the order below "Contact Seller".

What ever mod deleted my third post should be ashamed of themselves.
To allow this type of behavior to be discussed on your forum does not shine well on the MTBR.com name. You guys are awarded advertising dollars in one hand from manufactures and retailers, yet allow this shady business to be discussed by their customers on the other, while deleting posts from MTBR members trying to bring a little shame to the behavior of returning used equipment with premeditation and planning on how to do so.
This member (OP) should be banned for carrying on about it, along with the duche' bag who suggested buying from nashbar in order to abuse their return policy. Get a back bone MTBR!
Wow! This is getting to be a brutal thread. So I will add to it.
OldManBike: You are a cheap so-and-so (and probably old too). That's OK, I am a cheap so-and-so, too (and old). I hardly pay MSRP for anything ($50 for a bike tire? They have got to be kidding!).
If Amazon has the pedals at those less than $200 prices (I assume these are the 980s or 985s), I would assume they wouldn't take them back after being used because they do not specifically say they will. Performance, REI, etc., specifically say they will--no confusion. And their prices show it (except when you can get it on sale).
I have returned used items to both REI and Performance (REI easy and with smiles, Performance is usually a little grumpy). I don't feel bad about it. It is their policy, and sometimes I buy from them knowing that they will take it back if it doesn't work out for me. And usually paying the higher price.
Now, planning to buy from one of these stores with the full intent of returning whether you like or not--yeah, that seems a bit shady. But I have my own questionable behaviors, some that my friends have pointed out to me--repeatedly.
Everyone else--cool it. Just present your ideas without getting personal.
OMB, I apologize for the name calling. But I am an old, cheap, so-and-so.

I work at Amazon and generally we allow used/opened returned items within the return window. Items that are clearly damaged may be rejected, although I'm not sure of the inspection process, but you can file an A-to-Z guarantee claim if you feel the item was not up to par.
(I would post a link to the relevant page but my "post count must be 10 or greater")

I was stuck behind some aholes at REI the other day. They were returning ***** from as far back as 2005, including hiking boots that had worn out, a tent, a sleeping bag from 2007 that he said had lost its loft, some slippers, etc. Took at least 20 minutes. The returner was an older fellow, and his college age son was with him. Neither of them had any embarrassment about the obvious wrongness of what they were doing. The old man even argued with the guy about getting store credit/voucher instead of cash. And then they argued about not getting the dividend money on the returned prices. Sheesh. And I thought, wow, great policy, no wonder the prices are so high, and, I don't have a pair big enough to so obviously F the system and other consumers.
sounds more like bad business sense than a good return policy!
