People have ran 2.4's on those.. but why? The bike will do everything better with a smaller tire on that rim, its just not wide enough to properly support big tires.

I hear this alot in relation to rim width, but I've found that the verniers don't really show much difference from rim to rim. An X-King 2.4 on a 717 ends up being about 1.5mm narrower in width than the same tyre on a crest rim (19mm?). I can't say I can tell the difference in ride between the two either.

So for the OP, I'd definitely run an X-King 2.4 on that rim (and have).

    Fit? Almost anything.
I have used 2.6" tires on narrower rims.

But you may not like how the very high volume tires handle.
Depends on the specific tire, terrain and your riding style.

I have been running 2.35 Big Apples for the last 2 years, and I just switched over to 2.5 Hookworms, no problems on my 717's

Has nothing to do with measuring the tire width at all. Has to do with the relation of tire width to rim width. You can really ignore the tire bulge between rim widths because its irrelevant.

With a big 2.4 tire on a little 717, you could pretty much roll the whole tread to the side and hit the rim on a good corner, or be forced to run pressure so high that it doesnt respond properly.

You can put monster truck wheels on a honda civic too, it doesnt mean its going to work well. The road bike guys are using bigger rims than the 717 now, and thats for tiny <1 inch tires.

I felt like my 2.1's were maxed out on my 19mm 719's. The 2.1's felt much better on wider ~23mm rims. 2.35's were incomparably better on the 23's.

thanks this helps me out. I have been using small 2.0 or 2.1 on the ridged bike. I was just looking for something with a little more volume to help out with lower pressue. It sounds like a good pair of 2.2 or 2.4 tires should give me what i want.
