    Stainless steel nipples ?

Silly question, but why don't they make SS nipples so you get something stronger and more durable instead of brass ? Just wondering

Cost. Steel nipples would cost more to make.

    Strength: brass is strong enough.

    Galling

They would gall something fierce with the spokes.

    Stainless steel nipples ?

Well I know it's more expensive, but is the corrosion resistance and strength really not enough to be a better durable solution to brass nipples for winter climates, like urban commuting in nasty salts and other street chemicals ? If you can afford SS spokes over steel ones on your wheel, why not SS nipples too ?

    Stainless steel nipples ?

I had several brass nipples stuck from winter corrosion and stripped too. I'm not talking about mtb here, but real urban condition.

And could you explain a bit more on why it would be sooo costly ? People are building up wheelsets with $3 spokes and $500 hubs, I don't see how a few more $$ would be a big no-no.

Steel is harder to tool than brass; it's not just the cost of the nipple's material, but the total cost of production.

That said, If you take care of the wheels, corrosion is almost a non-issue, certainly less than if you stuck two pieces of steel next to each other and didn't sufficiently insulate them (which if you did with the brass nipples, they wouldn't stick anyway).

    Stainless steel nipples ?

    Thanks.

So I would assume the only one to have stainless steel nipples is the Man of Steel, aka SuperMan ?

because brass is more than strong enough and durable enough. stainless steel would be more expensive with no material benefit.

stainless steel in a spoke nipple application is not likely to gall unless you've thought of something i completely missed.

brass nipples have proven to be extremely durable, even under adverse conditions... well durable enough to outlast an aluminum rim. do you have some problem with brass nipples or is this just an exercise in mental masturbation?

poor comparison. mild steel spokes would corrode quickly.

Because self-mated austenitic stainless steel has a very low galling threshold stress, unless you're taling about one of the special grades like NItronic 60 (which we're not).

Having rounded off the wrench flats on a spoke nipple, personally, I would love to see them made from higher strength materials.
    whatever...

If you did it on a brass nipple you probably had the wrong size of spoke wrench.

Buchanan Spokes - Stainless Steel these dudes build a lot of wheels for the motorized bicycle crowd. If they exist they will be able to get them.

It's a valid question in my opinion. You're obviously somewhat knowledgeable, so if there's an easy answer why not offer it? Teach me something I don't know.
    The butt hurt is pathetic.

Dang. 10-20 times as much as a perfectly good brass nipple.
