    Shimano rear hub compatibility

Are the hub shells on Shimano's FH-M525 and FH-M525-A rear hubs identical? I know there are differences in the other parts (freehub body, seals, etc.) but I'm only interested in the hub shell.

I ask because the my current rear hub (M525) is on its way out (cups, cones, and bearings are all shot), so I bought a replacement with the intention of removing everything short of the shell and swapping it over to the current hub. But when the new hub turned up, it turned out to be an M525-A instead...

The tech docs detail most of the parts, but don't actually say anything about the hub shell itself:

    https://www.bike-components.de/bedie...re/fh-m525.pdf

Can I assume this means they're the same? I'm reluctant to find out by dismantling it in case I have to return it!

I have used both hub versions, I think the only difference is the cones, it's easier to adjust the bearings on the A version.

    Thanks, persuiter.

I took the hub apart and it's pretty much identical, with one exception: the brake-side opening on the newer M525-A is counterbored out to 30mm to allow the seal to fit in (with a 29.3mm bore for the cup). The older M525 just has a 29.3mm plain bore for the bearing cup.

So, annoyingly, I'm going to have to try and trim the seal down so that it'll fit...
