Not as "blingy" as some on here, but I'm still happy with the wheels I just had built up. 29er LB carbon XC rims, Hope Pro 2 EVO hubs (including the new 40T rear), Sapim CX-Ray spokes, and Sapim 12mm brass nipples. Everything is black ... very understated.

Wheel weights are 755 grams for the front and 886 grams for the rear ... the total wheelset weight comes to 1,641 grams.

I'm pretty happy at this point and can't wait to get some tires mounted up so I can take them on their first ride.

Dirty I9s, dirty Cx-Rays, dirty ENVEs. No idea about the weight. I've never felt the need to weigh them.

Red Chris King ISO hubs with steel drive upgrade, Stan's Flow 29er, DT Swiss SuperComp spokes, and alternating silver/red DT swiss nipples. With the most crappy ass $25 tire possible. Tubeless.

Probably the most ill fitting wheel set for my XC 29er, but I like the wider profile and bulletproof durability.

This probably doesn't count because I'm using less expensive BHS hubs but it was my first wheel build and I am proud of them. Plus I got this cool shot of them on the trail today. The whole 26" wheel build for front and rear was less that $200. I think they do bling though:

Sure. I read this after I order a set of KOM's and Hadley's. Did you find the CX RAYS to be a worthy upgrade?

I don't even want to know how much you want for them, actually I do.

White Industries hubs, Wheelsmith spokes and nipples, Dually rims. 100% made in the USA.

NOX rims, Hope hubs, Revolution spokes and alloy nipples.

I9 Torch Classic hubs, Stan's rims.

More on my FB page, I'll post some more of them here later tonight.

EDIT: one more quicky. Not that 'blingy' really, but kinda cool looking. Shimano XT hubs, Flow EX rims, 36 white DT Swiss Competition spokes. Built for a big guy looking to get back in shape. I don't build with white spokes anymore, so don't ask!

I'm 180 before gear/camelback so probably close to 200 all geared up. (I Don't skimp on equipment). I've had zero issues whatsoever. But I only have one not too wet season on them, and one race, about 1000 miles total. I would not recommend them in wet climates, or on a bike that is ridden year round in inclement weather.

Just use copious amounts of wheelsmith spoke prep, and they're fine.

Edit: it's also widely accepted that there's a high chance you'll be relacing them within ten years due to corrosion. It happens... And if you use a set of nice hubs it's worth a newer more advanced rim.

Near the coast? Salt induced corrosion is why you want brass, not your weight. Alloy nipples are susceptible to corrosion, brass not so much. Stick with black brass nipples.

White Industries M16 hubs with a semi-custom red anodized finish. They don't keep them in stock, but they're available by special order, you just have to be patient to wait for them. Arch EX 650B rims, red nipples.

Interesting. Would not have expected the I9 and XTR hubs to be within 1 g of each other (I realize that there is likely some variation in the rim weights but the hub weights must still be very close).

There was a 5g difference between the rims for each set, and only 2g difference in the hubset weights. Both were 15mm front and 142x12 rear.

Just curious what your thoughts about what Sapim says about their alloy nipples:

    Aluminum nipples

In the past, aluminum nipples had only one positive argument, the weight. All other features like corrosion resistance, friction, stiffness were specific to brass nipples. This changed in the last years drastically. All our aluminum nipples are now anodized. Salt spray tests showed better results than brass nickel plated nipples. You can choose 7 different colors. We had been able to reduce friction with a special coating. As an effect you donít need to oil or grease the nipple like you should with the brass version. For the last three years, Sapim has used the 7075 material and have additional strength added by the heat treatment T6. Alloy nipples are now stronger than brass. Aluminum nipples are more expensive but for sure much better than brass. For those who care about weight, special colors and quality, aluminum nipple is advised.

I've never used any of their nipples since I've been building mostly MTB wheels and use DT Swiss spokes. However, Pace-Line also has 7075 nipples available. They are more resistant to corrosion than standard 6000series alloy nipples, but they do still corrode. I actually did a low tech salt water test with one of each, scratched them up some to expose the bare aluminum and then let them soak for several days in some VERY salty water. The 6000series corroded faster, but they both corroded. I haven't tested brass...I'll have too though.

For riders near the coast, I'd still go with brass. Brass has proven to be very reliable over the years.

I don't know squat about aluminum versus brass nipples but I have been sailing for 30 years. Nobody in there right mind would ever use brass on a sailboat, it is always bronze. The zinc in brass leads to corrosion ( actually galvanic corrosion). Anodized aluminum has been used for years on sailboats for masts, toe rails and many other areas that get harsh salt water treatment with minimal issues. The real problems with the salt is from the juxtaposition of two types of metal with the salt water connecting them that leads to galvanic corrosion. i.e it creates a very weak battery and the electrons flow from one metal to another. I don't see how anodized aluminum can exhibit a bigger corrosion problem than brass, particularly if one is using stainless spokes.

Can someone explain the specific chemistry why brass is better for bikes?

Light-Bicycle's "narrow" 29er rims, Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs, 28 Revolution spokes per wheel, alloy nipples. Hubs are set up for thru-bolts and have an XD driver for use with SRAM's XX1 drivetrain. Silver hubs, spokes, and nipples to keep it classy. 1,457g These are mounted up on a 19.98lbs Niner HT.

Just used a set of gold Hadley's to lace up a pair of WTB KOM's on Sapim Race. I should have used gold nipples. I was on the fence. Looks great!

The world definitely needs more wheels with gold in them. Here's mine. Hope hubs, NOX rims, gold hubs and nipples. Bike also has a gold chainring and stem topcap.

And when taken racing in the MTNs, it gets a big gold cog too.

Although these are not carbon or extremely light, I think they fit the BLING BLING criteria

A nice SS wheelset and a burly rear wheel left the shop this week, both headed to CO.

This wheel was built for a customer well into Clyde territory. He's had problems with wheels going out of true and freehubs failing. We used a Chris King hub because their Ring Drive mechanism is super strong and handles high torque loads better than many other designs. We paired it to a Flow EX rim because it's wide, strong, and available in 36H drillings. DT Swiss Competition spokes were used laced 3-cross on the driveside and 4-cross on the non-driveside. The 3-cross lacing uses slightly shorter spokes which should be a bit stiffer laterally, and the 4-cross lacing transfers torque better since it's more tangential to the hub flange. Brass nipples for ultimate durability.

This wheel will eventually find itself on a custom WaltWorks 29er.

    4-cross like a boss.

This SS wheel is headed to Littleton, CO. I9 hubs with the SS specific rear, and KOM rims.

I really need one of these for myself

The 4D drilling on the WTB rims results in some really straight spoke lines going into the nipples.

    Blue on Blue Bling!

These are for a customer down in SoCal for his Santa Cruz Bronson. I am loving the blue on blue!

We used Hope Pro II hubs laced to WTB Frequency i25 rims with Sapim Force triple butted spokes and blue Sapim alloy nipples. Made for a very strong and stiff wheel for a 230 pound pilot. We went with the stainless freehub body to withstand the power of his massive legs

Here is a pretty sweet blingin' wheelset we build for a guy out of Northern Nevada. Heavier fella that wanted the Stainless freehub body. Black rim, black spokes and black nipples really make the hub stand out. Hope you enjoy some bling shots

Another set of KOM rims shipping out today, headed to Kansas. Love the deep blue color on the Hopes.

A few thoughts on the KOMs:
-The angled spoke drilling is very nice, the spokes take a very straight path into the nipple.
-The graphics are not removable - it's like they're printed directly onto the rims. This is kind of a bummer IMO.
-The weights jump around some. Each set I've built had one rim that weighed about 20-25g less than the other.

    Mango King Blilng

    Hey MTBR,

We built these up last week for a gentleman up in Massachusetts. Orange is my favorite color, so these were fun!

Turned out beautiful. We used Sapim Force spokes to lace the King hubs to the WTB i25 rim. The Force spokes are Triple butted with extra material at the J-Bend to make the spoke stronger. The cool thing is that it does not weigh any more than a standard double butted spoke. The orange alloy nipples match the hubs nicely accent the build.

Overall, you have an incredibly strong and good looking wheelset!

not super blinged out but the red nipples are enough for me. I think the frame is bright enough.

    Pink Bling!

    Hey guys,

Here is a great looking set of Industry 9 Torch Classic Hubs laced to WTB KOM rims with Sapim Force Spokes and Black alloy nipples. This wheelset was built with the intent to get noticed. Its going on a black anodized Canfield Yelli Screamy with a black RS Pike fork. The wheels will stand out and look so good against all that black!

Its pretty hard to beat 120 points of engagements in these hubs. I used to think that Chris King hubs are fast, but at 72 POE vs 120 POE, there is really no comparison

    Enjoy the pics.

Yes, these are the 'pink' hubs. They look a little more pink in person.

I absolutely love my KOM rims. They are my favorite AM-Enduro style rim.

My last build I did for myself was pretty much exactly what you describe. I used Force spokes vs the d-light. Other than that, they were the same. They turned out sick!
Good luck with your build and make sure and post pics!

    Orange Industry 9 blling

    Hey Guys,

These turned out pretty trick. The orange of the hubs match the orange nipples perfectly! Triple butted Force Spokes laced to WTB KOM rims. This is headed out to Minnesota and will end up on a Turner Flux!

    Enjoy!

    Black Beauties!

Got these Chris King-WTB KOM wheels built up and shipped out to California for a gentlemen by the name of Mike. He wanted a classic looking wheelset that was stiff, light and would take some hard riding. I really like how the Silver spokes really stand out and frame the hubs. Good color choice Mike!

    Enjoy the pics

Some new wheels for my lady! She's a lightweight and mostly rides paved trails, dirt roads, and the occassional bit of singletrack. She's got an entry level Giant hardtail that works fine for her needs, but at 32.5lbs (for an XXS woman's specific frame!) it's a tank. I knew new wheels and tires would drop some major weight, so here we are.

The goal was low weight without spending a lot, and something that would look good. Shimano SLX hubs are low cost and decent quality, the Stan's Crest rims are really light, Revolution spokes and alloy nipples keep more weight off. The white rims were used for two reasons: they match her bike, and they're on sale (~50% off!!) 'cause Stan's is clearing out their inventory of white rims (I've got a few more in stock if anyone's looking for a set). Silver spokes also match her bike, and the purple nipples add a little color.

The set weighs in at 1,585g and combined with new Small Block 8 tires (set up tubeless of course) we knocked 3.2lbs off her bike!

Probably the least blingy in this thread; I'm too cheap to afford anodized nipples or black spokes. My first hubset that didn't come pre-built: Hope Pro2 EVOs on Sun MTX-33s.

Soma, Surly, Salsa, Schwalbe, SRAM, Sun-Ringlť
