    Red is rad

Here are a set of DH Industry Nine hubs we laced up to Spank Spike Evo 35AL's. With the rim being 35mm wide, it makes for an extremely stiff wheel. This is just the weapon you need on a 8" travel DH sled.

    Enjoy the pics

Not terribly blingy, but a TOUGH set of wheels for a big guy who likes to shred. He picked up a set of new Ice Tech rotors with the wheels (he was having trouble overheating the stock rotors), and sent me this email this morning:

    "Hi Dustin,

Just wanted to let you know I got a chance to try out the new wheels yesterday. They are awesome! I hit one of our most technical areas here in the bay area (Skeggs Point) and crashed down about 2000 ft of elevation drop. The wheels performed great, felt really solid, and I really noticed a difference in the roll of the wheels, which I was not expecting. I was with a buddy, and when we would tip over the top of a hill or any section where it would open up and we would totally release brakes, I was quickly rolling away from him and I could really feel the difference in acceleration. They also felt fantastic during the long ass climb on fire roads back up the mountain. The new disc brakes worked great too, still got hot as hell, but didn't smoke or turn colors like my last discs.

And, when I got back, I spun my wheels and took a close look... perfectly straight and true. I'm totally stoked."

36H Flow EX rims, Hope Pro 2 Evo hubs, DT Swiss Competition spokes on the front and Alpine III on the rear. Silver brass nipples all around. Bomber!

The Alpine III spokes are tripple butted and use a 2.34mm diameter gauge at the elbow, it adds very little weight but increase durability and fatigue life. Good choice for bigger abusive riders.

These are more stealth than blingy, but that's how I like them! Crappy pictures, sorry! Derby 40mm 27.5 rims and DT Swiss 240 hubs, both de-badged! Built by the man, MC. Now I just need some new 27.5+ tires!

My LBS is known for incredibly detailed custom builds. Wheels get a lot of attention. Here's the most recent example. The owner just built his Knolly Warden, and here's a photo of one of the wheels from his build. Enve M70s, DT Swiss 240s, orange DT Champions, and notice the custom decals on the hub and fork.

Lets see some blinged out wheelsets..I9,CK,Hope..anything goes!-stevesenve.jpg

A link to the build is here.

The shop demo bike is a SB66, and it's wearing wheels with spokes custom painted to match the Yeti turquoise.

Lets see some blinged out wheelsets..I9,CK,Hope..anything goes!-photo-2.jpg

There are quite a few other examples that I can think of, but don't have photos of. Some are outrageous, like the 'rainbow vomit' wheels on his DJ, which used every spoke color he had in the shop. Some are subtle, like the gold and white spokes to match a friend's V10 frame. And some have a foot on each side of the line, like the wheels he did that fade from yellow to orange to red.

    Blue bling!!

    Hey MTBR,

I built these up for myself late Thursday night and neglected to take pics of just the wheels due to a little re-occupation with getting them mounted up on my bike!!

Here are some of the post-mount pre-ride pics. I think the blue Kings are my new favorite color

    Enjoy the pics

Will got his Nox/Chris King wheels with the black and white spokes all set up on his S-Works Enduro. This thing is ballin' out of control! He'll be taking a trip to France to race the Megavalanche Alpe d Huez on this bike. Color me jealous...

    Hi dude..

    Sweet looking bike and rims..!!!

Finally finished my build with Sapim Alloy Nipples and they nearly look second hand..LOL

Using a proper size spoke wrench is critical when working with alloy nipples. Lots of repairs I've done wheels come in with rounded off or collapsed nipples because someone used a wrench that was too big.

High quality spoke wrench, that is the right size (there should be very little play) is the key. A Park Tool size zero is good for most alloy nipples, it's the black one. I've also found that 4-sided wrenches work best.

This is my favorite wrench I've tried. Fits the hand well, smooth finish, heavy and solid. It's 4-sided, so it drops down onto the nipple, you can't come in from the side.

That Park wrench is the exact one I use, and have used it on thousands of alloy nipples. I build mostly with DT Swiss spokes and nipples, but the few wheels I've done with Sapim that wrench worked fine. Maybe your wrench had a defect or something?

mine didnt fit when I first got it either, it was VERY tight and id have to force it on. I took it to an old wheelset with scratched nipples, used it on half a dozen nipples, then took it back to the wheelset I was building, and it fit perfect.

    Mango King Bling

    Hey guys,

I had to share these blingin Mango King wheels we built for a gentleman by the name of Pono who lives in Hawaii!

Laced to Spank Spike 35AL rims, these make for one bomber set.

I am a little partial to the Mango as its my favorite color

    Enjoy

For what its worth, make sure and see if you can see a Blue Industry 9 hub in person. They are much more 'grey' than their website suggests. They are not really close to a Hope or Chris King blue.

I wish the decals were easily removed on the KOM rims, because^^ that ^^ is a combo that makes a lot of sense for a lot of folks, but many will not want the mis-matched graphics.

Thank Dusty! I can't wait to get these on my bike. And thanks for such a quick turnaround time even with the Forth in middle of the build. They look great from here, lol. FedEx updated the delivery time to tomorrow, jerks .

dgaddis, I was going for sensible with the rim choice. I wasn't really looking to lose weight off my Honzo. I might due to the KOM rim. I beat up rear rims way too much. I'll see how peeling on the KOM stickers goes and let you know how many fingernails I have left. I have a whole bottle of Goo-Gone though. I prefer the least amount of stickers possible.

The problem is they're not stickers, they're water transfer graphics. Basically they're painted/printed directly onto the rims. You'll need chemicals to get them off...acetone maybe? I know people use fingernail polish remover to remove graphics from stems and seatposts...might work on these too. Let us know how it goes!

Well, I guess somebody told me wrong about them being stickers. I will take a look at it when they arrive. I know people have removed graphics off of Yelli frames with acetone, which I believe are water transfers. The Frequency stickers are coming off at least.

Lets see some blinged out wheelsets..I9,CK,Hope..anything goes!

How have you found the reliability of the KOM? I went through a rear one pretty quickly, failing to seal in my target race of this year. Gutted. Hard tail and in rocky conditions here around Sydney. I'm 78kg, do I go Frequency next or try the KOM again and put it down to bad luck?

What do you mean "failed to seal"?

Dented rim, so tubeless failed. Had to switch to tube, then punch flatted, was horrible. Anyway, debating what to do now... Rim seems soft...

May have been too low with the rear pressures. If I went KOM again, I'd run higher pressures. If I go for a heavier rim with aerolites to get back to the same weight overall. But haven't heard of anyone else with my experience on the KOM...

I'm running a pair of KOMs with DT 350 hubs (built by Mike, Lace Mine 29 - Big Bicycle Wheels) and they have been nothing but solid. I ride typical East Coast rocky, rooty, singletrack and they haven't moved a mm out of true. I'm 6'4" and 190 lbs, so I'm no lightweight....i'm very happy with mine.

Thanks Latent. Hardtail or dually? What pressures are you running? Mine are still true, just dented

Niner Jet 9 Carbon full suspension.

I run about 27-28 in the rear and 25 in the front. I could probably go a little less, but I'd rather not have to worry about burping. I've got a pair of Specialized Captain Controls (2.0) on there now and I really like them.

Thanks, am thinking I need to run closer to 30 on the hardtail. Harder on the wheels than a FS. I use the Controls too, as well as Rubena Scylla. Cheers

A couple recent builds using the beautiful White Industries hubs.

The new CLD hubs laced to a set of Velocity Cliffhanger rims, used on a Seven 29er/flatbar road bike by a bigger guy who logs a LOT of miles. 36 spoke rear, 32 front.

The older Mi6 hubs laced up to some Stan's Flow EX 29er rims. SHINY!

And Profile Elite hubs laced up to the Atomik Carbon AM29er rims.

    These Torch's are on FIRE!

    Hey Guys,

Forgot to get these up last week when I put them together. Better late than never!

Industry 9 Torch Classic hubs laced to Atomik Carbon's AM/Enduro Modified Hooked rim. 33mm external width and nearly 25mm internal width. The bead is 4.5mm thick to help build and extremely stiff wheel as well as help with rock and root impacts on the trail. For being a 29er wheel, I could not get them to flex laterally with all my weight on them. I am no lightweight at 185 pounds.

They are not the widest rim available, nor the lightest, but they strike a very nice balance between weight and strength that many of the mega wide rims are missing these days.

These are headed to Tahoe for a semi-Pro racer for her new Enduro race machine

    Blue and Orange

Here are my personal wheels that I built several weeks ago and have been enjoying up in the Northern Utah trails.

Navy Chris King Hubs laced to Atomik Carbon Mod-Hooked rims. 33mm external and 24.5mm internal width. They strike a happy medium in rim width while boasting a 4.5mm bead width. It helps build a laterally stiffer rim while adding the additional protection from rocks and trail obstacles.

I am not sure why I waited so long to switch to carbon wheels...
