Seven Summits and ????

Planning a weekend trip to Rossland to ride the Seven Summits. We are coming from N. Idaho.

We'd love to find another ride of this length and quality or longer to do on the other day. Any suggestions as to what to hit either in the Rossland area or somewhere south of there?

Although it wouldn't be a dedicated loop, it should be quite easy to piece together a ride of any length for any skill level using the vast trail network around town that is all pretty much ridable from the campground.

Stop by Revolution (it's the only bike shop in town) to grab a trail map and chat with whomever is working at the time to get you started.

For an AM ride with some stunts that are still doable on the 'pedally' bike I'd suggest both whiskey and crown point. Some skinnies, most drops are < 6', ride-arounds for most TTF's. Those would probably be a good starting point for a more experianced rider, and you'd probably still have enough energy to check out one or two other trails.

What he said plus I'll throw in a big one that is on your way home if you take the Waneta/Boundary border crossing south of Trail BC (next town east of Rossland). I haven't ridden this one yet but from all the reports I've heard from friends it very worthwhile. The most common descriptors I hear about it, from newbies to speedsters, are "swoopy" and "wicked effin' long downhill". That combination works for me.

The trail is on Mt Abercrombie which is situated between Northport and Metalline Falls in Washington, accessed from the west side via Deep Lake Boundary Road (aka Co Hwy 9445). Having not ridden it I won't try giving directions but the guys at Revolution should know the score as it's getting to be a popular ride among the locals. Grease them with a cold 6-pack from the beverage shop across the street and they'll hook you up.

Here's a good XC route (Rossland style) from town that might point out that a bar stool is the ride of choice for the day after raging on the 7S. Trail map required, all times approximate, many bailout options.

- park at the Flying Steamshovel
- climb up Washington Street almost to Centennial trailhead, ride through yellow gate onto Centennial
- go under highway via tunnel
- climb Curly's (5mins)
- climb Miner's to junction with Redtop/Redhead (10mins)
* see recommendation below re: Full Monte trail
- climb Redtop to top of Red Mtn, good switchback practice (20mins)
- enjoy the view
- descend Redtop, continuing past junction w/Miner's
- Redtop vs Redhead option, go right because Redhead is 'mo funner
- right on road for ~200yds
- left onto Redtop connector (or whatever it's signed as)
- stare longingly at patio of Rockcut Pub, search camelback for cash (10mins)
- ride south on Centennial, cross paved road
- south on Moe's
- right then left onto Larry's, climb (5mins)
- descend Curly's, use caution as it's popular with non-cyclists
- south on Centennial, go through tunnel
- climb Monte Christo (15mins)
- left on TechnoGrind
- left on Full Monte (maybe skip the bigger ascent to Red Mtn in favour of this trail, it rocks!)
- climb Full Monte (5mins)
- descend Full Monte (seat drop if that's your style)
- right on Coffee Run (marked "back to Rossland")
- stop at Milky Way (trail is on your left after 2-3 fast minutes on doubletrack)

* option A (easiest)
- stay on doubletrack, traverse to town

* option B (down, up, traverse, down, up, sucky climb to finish)
- left on Milky Way, fun flowy down (a 2nd vehicle gives the option to set up a shuttle at the truck runaway lane at the bottom of this trail)
- right on Green Door, climb (10mins)
- climb Roger's (10 seconds)
- enjoy view @ bench
- traverse Roger's
- straight thru on Cemetary back to town, ride through the cemetary
- bidch about how steep the roads/streets are in this town

* option C (hey Speedy, how are your climbing legs?)
- stay on doubletrack for ~2-3mins
- right on upper Milky Way, gradual climb (5mins)
- left after the log ride, steep climb (2-3mins)
- right onto red rocky trail, Back of K.C.
- try making the steep switchback, right line
- stay right after switchback, climb Back of KC, can get painful (5mins)
- at junction with TechnoGrind (on right) go left on KC, climb (5mins)
- top out at viewpoint above town
- enjoy the view, specifically of Flying Steamshovel, drool
- look for your missing lungs/legs
- vow never to take directions from sadistic local again
- descend/return on KC, caution for hikers/dog-walkers from this point on
- left at TechnoGrind junction
- follow Loop Trail signs back to Centennial trailhead
- descend to bar (The Best Three Words in Mountain Biking!)

Would it be easier to just guide them Dave.......;)
:D:D

wow, thanks for the great beta!

Looks like there's much more to do from town than I thought, and it's great to have your thoughts on how best to connect the spiderweb!

It's morphed into a family trip (sigh) but I should be able to get in two rides, and am very stoked!

Will print your directions and bring it with the map...
