I want to drop some weight from my SLX crankset. I have a standard 44-32-22 setup and that the middle and inner rings are rather heavy. Can someone steer me in the right direction to replace these with some lighter ones

move to a 2 x 9 setup. You can buy some light 26/38 or 28/42 specialite TA 64/104mm ring from dulight.fr web site. You also need short bolts for the midle ring as the original one will be too long to clamp just 1 ring.

i swaped few FSA and shimano to that configuraiton, work well. Just make sure to have a 34T cassette if you have big hill in your area.

Mail man, if you are thinking of going the 2x9 route. i have exact weights if you want and i also have a set of used TA Specialties 26/38 that i used on my SLX cranks. i also have a new 40 tooth Specialties ring as well. Will sell them all for a good price as they are just sitting after i sold the cranks. If i remember correctly my SLX cranks were 710 grams (without bb) set up 2x9 with the TA Specialties rings and stock chain ring bolts. PM me if you are interested.

i just did a XT m760 2006 crank. You replace the small ring by a 26T and the midle one by a 38 or 39T, no big ring. 28/42 is also a good setup. You need shorter bolt to clamp the midle ring. This setup work with any 64 / 104mm crank. You'll save close to 100gr. The only other option to drop crank weight is to change it! Kforce light crank (no ring) is 520gr vs 594gr for XT. I just bought a Race face next SL for someone and weight only 625Gr with 3 rings and bolts.

Original:
crank 594 Gr
22t: 22 Gr
32t: 45 Gr
44T: 81 Gr
+ bolts

2x9:
Crank: 594 gr
specialitee TA 26T: 28gr
Specialitee TA 38T: 54Gr
+ shorter bolt

The rings:

there is also 26t/36T Driveline chainring available on ebay from the same seller. However this seller don't have bigger one.

the bolts:

CRC also have short bolts

i wish this will help you.

If you want, i can send you pictures a 2x9 XT crank

Your weight savings going from 3x9 to 2x9 by dropping the big ring are at the most the weight of the big ring and the weight of the longer crank bolts over the shorter crank bolts. You normally gain a little weight on your remaining chainrings because they end up being bigger. ie 22t -> 26t, 32t -> 36/38/39t.

You can almost drop the same amount of weight off an SLX crankset by just replacing all of the chainrings with lightweight versions.

If you use your 22t or 44t chainrings then going 2x9 may well suck.

If you go 1x9 or 1x10 then the weight savings are significant.

Tremblo - on your figures going from 3x9 to 2x9 has saved you (22+45+81)-(28+54)=66g

FYI for the original poster, my weight is the entire crankset incuding the non drive side arm. the weights above are only the drive side.

The crank weight i posted above are for the drive + non drive side, without bottom bracket.

The saving is not much on a XT because rings are already light. On a crank with heavier rings, saving is more signifiant.

1 x9 or 1x10 setup weight saving is much signifiant but you choice of gear become more limited if you want you bike to be multipurpose or if there is big hill in your area. A 2 x 9 setup is good on hill and is usable up to 45Km with a 38T in front.

I posted that setup because SingleSPeedKid was interested for a 2 x 9 setup.
