Shimming a 27.2 is not a good idea, it increases stress on your frame. Also, if the seat post isn't flexible to begin with, you gain nothing. There are 31.6 flexible seat posts such as the Syntace HiFlex P6. I'd look into one before shimming a post that doesn't fit on the theory that a thinner post is more flexible.
Ok thanks for the heads up. The syntace looks really nice but out of my price range. I'm looking for something under 100.00 any aluminum light ones that flex?
A flexy aluminium post is generally a short lived post. Aluminium fatigues when it flexes.
A smaller seatpost and a shim can work fine as long as the shim is at least 4" long, that's the amount of insertion that most seatpost and frame manufacturers require for insertion overlap. Many of the seat post shims are only 2.5" - 3" long, and that isn't enough for either the frame or seatpost.
Even Scott supplies 4" long seat post shims with their Genius LT bikes to allow a 34.9 seat tube ID to use a 30.9mm dropper post.
Mind you, flexy carbon seatposts aren't any cheaper in 27.2 than they are in 31.6 size
