Looking to upgrade wifes wheelset on giant lust 27.5. She weighs 130lbs with mostly rocky rooty xc riding and occasional mild downhill runs at killington. Will not be doing any drops or jumps. Looking for a stiff lightweight wheelset any suggestions in the $1200 range??
I-9 trail 32 or 24 hole. Either will be plenty stiff, durable, convertible, and customizable. Both of these options have held up really well to some brutal trail riding here in Pisgah under folks a lot bigger than 130lbs.
American Classic 27.5 race. Very stiff about 1420 grams. MSRP $1000 but can be found cheaper. Plus they have 24mm internal width, Just watch your air pressure because rims are very thin. Ive had the 29 race version for over a year and they have been great. I feel that these are the stiffest lightweight alum wheelset( High spoke tension). You won't have the POE of a I9, but these hubs roll.
That being say if you wife isn't a super agressive rider and only weighs 130lb. save some cash and get the crest wheelset(Will be stiff for her weight). Plus have money left over to buy a lightweight cassette(XX or XO) and rotors and drop another 1/2 lb.
I built this wheelset for my son 1 year ago and its been great with him Dirt jumping, DHing, urban riding and XC.
LB XC rims ,28 hole, Sapim Laser spokes, Sapim Polyax nipples, A2Z XCF 15 convertible front hub, Circus Monkey HDW3 rear hub = 1356 grams, 27.5 would only be slightly heavier as these rims were not under weight and you can request lighter weight rims when ordering from LB. All in the wheelset cost me $560.00 ( that's with building it myself ).
I'm likely going to build another set for a build I'm doing for my Daughter.
They're pretty well established by now. You really never heard of them? Been the talk of the forums for a year. I use their AM rims on my XC and Enduro bikes and their DH rims on my DH bike. No problems, light, stiff, cheap (the DT 240 hubs and Aerolite spokes up the total wheel cost though).
