    Burner Build Advice pls

    Medium Turner Burner - here is the build so far. Some parts came from a 2000 Giant NRS,

    I have a few unconfirmed weights due either to my haste or my scale's shortcomings. I couldn't weigh the frame before building it up as my scale has a 5lb limit so I used 5.9lbs as my weight. Other areas that are unconfirmed are the cables (used 100g as a rough estimate which is probably high), and the disk brakes which I installed before weighing.

    I'd like to take another 1/2lb off but have run out of SO blessings so the budget is limited. I don't really want to sacrifice much in the way of durability so I was thinking pedals and brakes - perhaps Candy SL's and some Magura Louise's...


    If anyone has any input please feel free to share.

    a few suggestions

    Nice bike you have there- just the frame I would like. Tires are pretty personal I guess but IRC mythos would save you a bit- they weigh about 450gm for the 1.95s or 550gm for the 2.1s (someone correct me if Im wrong here), and the rear is a bit like the Velociraptor- I like em.

    The Thompson post is nice but seems heavy compared to some of the carbon offerings out there. There are other areas but I guess more expenisive such as XT->XTR 952 r.derailler (only saves about 30 or so g though), and XT->XTR casette.
    As it it is very sweet- you must be happy with a sub 26lb burner. Nice work.

    Relatively cheap weight savers:
    Grips: Foam will save 45-50 grams

    The SRAM PC-89r Hollowpin weighs a bit less than the PC-99. Mine weighs 255 grams at 106 links. Costs $27 at JensonUSA. The KMC-10 weighs even less. If you wait till you need to replace your chain anyway, its basically a low or no cost item.

    Cut down your seatpost. I'm 6' 3", and ride an XL. I need about 360 mm of seatpost to get an adequate insertion length into my seat tube. While each bike is a little different on that, you almost certainly don't need 420 mm, especially riding a medium.

    Using Al bolts on all non load bearing parts, shifters, etc can save a surprising amount of weight. Ti is not as cost effective, but should be used (or steel) on load bearing parts such as the stem and seatpost clamp.

    Candy pedals are nice. I picked up a set of the Candy C's (a tad heavier than the SL's but cheaper) on Ebay for $57 brand new including shipping. Mine weigh 314 g's.

    Nice fork by the way.....The Noleen was the best weight/performance enhancing item I bought. You can get Ti brake bosses for them also, saves about 10 grams for $11 or so.

    There are defintely lighter tires, but thats also an area where you wouldn't want to compromise just for weight. If you find a lighter tire that you like, there are some large weight savings to be had there.

    Expensive:

    You could drop quite a bit more weight and still maintain durability, but it'd require a bigger investment. A lightweight 5 bolt compact crankset with a 20t granny ring, combined with a Dura-Ace 12-27 rear cassette/derailleur is a big weight saver, but at a financial cost. Being that you have already invested in a quality crankset, It probably wouldn't be worth it.

    Once again, nice bike. You don't really need to change a thing.

    Shifters: Take the pods off and put some carbon patches there like Duckman, or just some tape.
    Grips: Foam of Tape!
    Pedals: Some wife beaters or something lighter...
    Cassette: Consider a road cassette light ultegra or dura ace
    Seatpost: I would keep the Thomson, but that is an area to save some weight by going carbon.

    And thank you for the compliments everyone. It is certainly the best bike I have ever owned (not that I have had a huge inventory or anything). I was turned on to the Noleen by you guys and owe you many thanks for the 2 that I currently have (wish I had bought more!)

    I'm leaning pretty heavily towards the Candies right now. The Ritchey's that are on there are a $25 bin buy from Supergo and have a tendency to stretch the springs every time I hit a rock - I think they're on their last legs. The IRC's are great tires but I haven't had much luck with them here in rocky AZ where the sidewalls are constantly being ripped out.

    I'll have to check on the seatpost length - as you can tell from the photo the Burner has a fairly steep top tube and there's a lot of seatpost exposed - according to the Turner site the seatpost has to extend below the gusset at the top-tube/seat-tube union.

    I will also start hunting down AL and TI bolts for it - what are the ballpark weight savings for a full bolt kit again?

    a complete set of 2004 Louise brakes would run in at 842g (mine weight that). You would save about ¬ľ pounds, and the brakes are great! Very nice feel and power! i still prefer my Martas, but for the price, they are an excellent choice!
