Fun mt bike events - ideas?

We had a poker run the other night in Wenatchee and it was very fun. We're looking for other "fun" mt bike events that others have tried with success with all ability levels and ages. "Fun" = mildly competitive but not race-like and designed to bring people out, not scare them away.

Any ideas out there in MTBR-land?

Mountain bike orienteering. Have a map with different places they have to go to with different point values.

A group of us ride Every Wednesday night, so we do have theme nights. Halloween costume rides, winter x-mas light rides and stuff like that.
One of our favorites I like to call "sufferfest". You could ride anything other than a regular trail bike. Full on DH bike (with fullface and kit), a single speed dirt jumper, or anything fully rigid. If you did ride a trail bike it had to be 2 sizes too big or too small for you.

Everyone had a great time and it made you appreciate your regular bike. Nothing beats ripping trail on a 3 speed beach cruiser!

    Magnificent trophy!

warmonkey was just telling me the other day that they once hauled a BBQ & hot dogs and a whole lotta beer up onto the ridge, and handed out on every lap folks made around a trail they'd just dug. Rolled it all in nicely, lol.

Sooo, there have been BBQs out on this side post trail completion too. Missed the pump track one. And, the FT3K chainless but it did set the standard for trying that. An orienteering version of the old classic scavenger hunt has been attempted and popular in the past too. Updated with required iPhone pics to prove you were there.

Solstice rides with bonfire parties are pretty big around here. Riders do whatever route they want and then meet up at a pre-determined location/time for refreshments. Usually folks shuffle in/out throughout the evening. Good times!

Tech Challenge ... we put this together as a part of a recent bike festival, with pretty good turn out. Basically you got about a 4 mile route with various "Tech Stations" along the way. Each station is a difficult challenge, like slippery roots, a skinny to ride over, a rock garden, a steep climb, etc. If the rider completes the station with no dabs, he is awarded points. Point values are determined by the difficulty of the station. In between the stations is a lovely singletrack through the woods. At the end, points are tallied and winners are announced. depending upon turn out, you could have age classes, gender classes, etc.

    Huffy toss

how cold I forget ... the infamous Huffy toss. Single Track Mind bike club invented this. Get an old junk Huffy bike, and each contestant is given a chance to toss it as far as he or she can. great fun.

At the Black Diamond Bikepalooza a couple years back they had a poker run type thing but instead of cards they had events and a punch card. There was a bike toss, a hula hoop thing and a bunch of other events. They also did a Tech Challenge, but turnout wasnt that great for it. I think a lot of riders were intimidated by it.

The bike toss and mini-bike race are MBO traditions!

We did our second Poker Run last night with lots of smiles and miles. June 11th we're going to do a Trivia Run on Stairway to Heaven. Details below...

    Trivia Ride Directions

    - Each rider gets two Trivial Pursuit cards with six questions on each card. You will ask your partner the questions on your card.
    - Throughout the ride each group has to stop 11 times and ask ask each other the 11 trivia questions in order. You can stop wherever and whenever you like.
    - If both riders answer the question correctly you get to keep riding.
    - If either of you misses the question you earn a time penalty based on the number of the question you’re on (you can only be penalized once per stop, so if the first rider misses the question there’s no need to ask the second rider his/her question)

    - First 5 questions = one minute penalty each
    - Second 3 questions = two minute penalty each
    - Third 3 questions = three minute penalty each
    - Bonus Question - Each rider gets a bonus question that is double or nothing. If you miss a question you can choose to try the Bonus Question. Your partner asks you the next question on your card and if you get it right it wipes out your wrong answer. If you miss it you double your time penalty.

How about a short track race like the Tricycle race in "Revenge of the Nerds". Get a local Brewery to sponsor it!

How about a "beer mile" style event. If you know what those are for running. Actually that's a horrible idea.

But maybe something similar to "hashing" which runners do:
