Devil's gulch / Mission ridge Ride Report from August 31 2013
The road to the DG Trail Head is closed and gated approx 1/2 mile beyond the Crazy man's junk place. there is a sign explaining that the 2012 fire left a lot of unstable sediment just waiting to wash down in a flash flood. However, just before the gate there is room for parking for approx 6 vehicles. despite a No Parking sign at the crazy man's place, there were people parked there and that's where I parked. From there I rode approx 2 miles to the trail head and then began the climb up Devils gulch. Several other riders were parked at the Sand Dreek trailhad and incorporating Red Hill into their loop.
The trail was excellent due to recent rain. However there was big time erosion at all the creek crossings from last year's fire.
Other than the creek crossings, the trail was fabulous
I made it up to the 4-way, and continued on Devil's gulch to the parking lot where there's this cool hoo-doo type rock:
then i headed west on FR9712 ( Liberty-Beehive ) to the upper Mission Ridge TrailHead.
the mighty Columbia
had a little lunch and nap there whilst my trusted steed patiently waited
The descent of upper Mission is the best ride on the planet as far as I'm concerned. gnar, flow, views, variety, beauty. I love the way this trail works it's way across and through Mission Lava flows.
evidence of last year's fire was everywhere
looking at the west face of Tronsen Ridge and it's wild exfoliated slabs
Near the end of the ride I hooked up with Igor, and we rode out on Red Devil
