The Kettle Crest trails are just a bit east of Republic on Hwy 20/Sherman Pass: Trail:Kettle Crest trails - Evergreen Trail Guide
It looks to be about 20 miles from Republic to Sherman Pass.

Perfect, I forgot to search the obvious. Thanks!

Lake Curlew is a great camping spot if you can get a site. Unbelievable fishing from shore or boat.

My dad used to go on regular hunting trips to Republic, mostly in the 60s through late 80s, I went a couple of times hunting and also just camping. We would camp near the 'south fork of the San Poil river' (nice sized creek) near Copper Butte on an Alfalfa farmers land my dad and his hunting buddies were friends with. We used to take small motorcycles and do some great rides. I think a lot of it was destroyed by mining, but we rode a lot of really fun double track, there was a lot of climbing and some great vistas, a few old mines to look at and not go in, and some old abandoned homesteads to poke around. There was some cow-trail single track iirc too. That was a beautiful area, I bet you'll find some great riding without too much trouble.
