So the scene is promising in the 81-77 area?!

I know the hills are rugged down that way. I would be down for helping clear some trail on a weekend. I have 2 chainsaws and have ordered a Dakine Builders pack (to carry a saw)

post up when work is gonna get done!

    Rocks

It's Virginia mountain top riding, rocks of all kinds. Not too many of the shark tooth type, just enough to keep you awake. Been adjusting on my new SJ Pro Carbon all day. Now ready to see if all my adj. are right.
Riding North Fork Mtn up by Seneca Rocks tomarrow, Rode there 2 weeks ago and on 2004 SJ so will get a nice comparson.

Might be some serious brushwacking. There is nothing of the orginal trail left. Would be nice to know what we are getting into though. So far looks to be an awesome advanced level ride.

Hey,talk it over among those who are doing the most work-but i can offer a B.O.B. trailer at cost +(shipping & tax) I used one for years-sold it when i went 29er(wouldnt fit) now they do a 29er model. I only ask that it is a group buy-and will be used for Bland Co. trails only(or up here if we need y'all someday) I was able to carry a chainsaw/fuel/mattock/rake/water/food/brush clippers-on any trail. Round Mtn.-we cut out the deadfalls back in the early 90's with one-so i know they can handle Bland co...LOL
Just pm me if serious and i will give a price(still not cheap) and we can have it here in 4days.
Thanks for all the work-see y'all sometime this weekend!

    Smile Walker Mtn Tr. update

Now have 3.1 miles of trail open.
Took awhile working through the the big rock garden, but its now ridable, with optional lines.
Had a leaf blower and chain saw up there Sunday so trail is completely free of leaves.
Also have some interesting log crossings. First mile of the trail is pretty tough, but after that you get rewarded with some flowing single-track, then the rock garden, then some more flowing single-track. You get the idea, classic Va. mountain top riding. Come out and ride or work (tools are out there). Really needs to be ridden to get the tread packed down.
Pumpkin ice cream at the Big Walker Country Store makes a great after ride treat.

Sun. 10/31 going to ride the finished part-put on boots and bushwack the rest-will mark with yellow tape on the 100 yard. Will be starting at 10:30/10:45-leaving my shop at 10am.
If you want in-will be 6+ total ride-12+ total bushwack. Bring a pack-boots-food,water-extra clothes and a light. I will be moving fast-so if you are not up to it,you will have to go back solo. I want to meet up where i was last Sun. Will be a hoot!

Hey guys: I think the blue/marker flags are off the trail,3 of us looked at it yesterday and all agree.Dont know if someone else moved them or not but we need to BE SURE we stay on original / existing trail. clean up ,not new .This is very important. We need to get together on this before we proceed. Also if anyone see s hiker/raker/Bill tell him to wait on us to be sure of final trail marking .
    Thx

Anyone been out lately? About 2wks ago we were. Gonna be a mess geting around that cliff. Found the AT-it went out to the tip and worked down on the ledge-not bikeable. Saw your flags-may work...also check a long, less grade straight line-less work-more sustainable too. Also-ther has been some hunting up top-surprised me-they had a kill-and probably thank you for the work-used the trail to drag out-saw sign, hair blood,etc-but couldnt backtrack the kill sight-but they were in about 2mi i think. So BLAZE ORANGE except Sundays!!!!!

dkeg: We are about 3 miles in .hollar with your schedule when you re comin in and we ll try to get together and ride somewhere !

29buzz:I m thinkin a more straight line than is flagged,i think that is the old trail and is more substainable also .We ll get a better look at the cliff area but there is a good overlook there that we need to use ,even if out/back. Too many hunters for me,and Sundays are covered up so i m on hold for a couple more weeks .

    well packed

Was out there Sunday. Hunters have the first couple of miles packed down pretty good.
29buzz thanks for taking a look, found sign that there was trail where I flagged, but has really grown up since then, would like a better way around.

Update : 7 Sisters is in great shape as of Sunday 2/6/2011,short ice patch on the campgroud side but other wise nice. The trail has such a solid/shell base its very ridable without any damage.Parking at the day parking is icy,so use caution there. Also been reclearing the trail at the bench on out toward interstate.Picked up tons of small sticks all the way across from campground to bench. Come ride(or push!) the Sister Wytheville VA ,couple miles off interstate 77

Was at the rocks at the Wolf Creek day use area Sun. only a small bit of snow/ice. Also Monday did a hike on the AT above Burkes Garden...south face all clear as were flat unshaded areas-more clear than not. This is higher than Monster Rock...so i think we can ride/work on Monster soon! Will check next weekend unless i go south.

Saw the new work on Monster Rock...a lot better! At the cliff though.. there are multiple trails marked/started-which one? The current blue flag is too steep-the way by the overlook is much better-in my opinion. I went all the way to the end of what is done and back-nice. It is,for bearing purpose...above Gullion Fork ponds now....a long way still to go!
But y'all have definitely done a lot! Will be back up Sun. 17th.

RE-discovered a Bland Co. extreme gravel grinder. Well,it takes an MTB-but is not tecnical-just really washed out powerline roads and slick creek crossings. The downhill is almost 2000ft!!!.Park where Rt52 crosses the AT...head down towards Kimmberling road...turn left after you cross I 77 on the bridge...climb up Hogback till sick. At the Powerline crossing with the millage sign-turn right uphill for a 100yds..then,hold on!! Follow the most worn road/trail-will go into the woods after a few miles. Then-really hold on! Super steep, blind turns, slick creeks-rocks-etc. When you hit the next road-go right back up the the car-another climb, and the end on the pavement will humble you-LOL! Est. 10mi 3000ft climb-2000+ downhill( alot of the climb is easy gravel comming back out 3d climb.)

Monster Rock...it is getting overgrown! Grass and low growth obscure the line in a bunch of spots-sometimes you find you are not even on it-LOL! We need to ride it more! I havnt been in a month-and it looks like no one else has. No need for trail work on what is done-just needs boots and knobbies to shape back up!

29Buzz, have you ever ridden Walker Mountain Rd? Across from Walker Mountain overlook.

I am mainly a MTBer, But when I come down and visit the parents in Wytheville I tend to hit the back gravel roads on my cross bike.

I have been wanting to hit Walker Mountain Rd but can't seem to come up with a nice route.

dkeg...it is a good x-bike road..but where it drops into the valley back to 717...it need a mtb for a few miles....i have done it,gotta walk 100yrds here and there. another good one is off 52 on the next mtn north-Brushy...head either way-good stuff...and off 42 on the other side of Walker is the back way into Burkes Garden...it is an epic climb, has a down hill in the middle-but around 9mi total! also on the Wytevill side of Walker...back near Deertrail park...a gravel grind back to Crawfish Valley and back around on Blacklick road-est 35mi. And im tired of typing...there is more! The gravel grind on a x-bike is incredible in Bland Co....100's of miles!
