Maybe not quite as good of shape as last year when much of the trailside was freshly burnt in a controlled burn, but still in pretty good shape the Lasso Loop section of the Middle Mountain Mama Race should be rolling good and fast for the race next Sunday.
A couple of hung-up leaners we didn’t feel safe cutting in the Douthat State park section of Middle Mountain.
As usual, Middle Mountain is an awesome trail – really it may be my favorite.
A little more overgrown than Middle Mountain Trail in Douthat State Park, but the trail sections of the Lasso Loop in the George Washington National Forest are still quite pass-able
At the north end of Middle Mountain, the hillside is like a wall. Straight up, straight down with a skinny trail (wet in places) to keep you honest.
Across Wilson Creek and up through the burn, the Brushy Mountain Trail climb on Blueberry Hill is as tough as ever. Funny, after the burn some fire dependent species popped up – right in the trail.
After the turn on Salt Pond trail, the tecky blue rock section is always cool.
The descent past the horse trail should be as fast as ever.
Wilson Creek was full last weekend
As were all the side streams
The climb up Sandy Gap was clean and steep.
Whether you race or not this is a fun loop. Check it out sometime but it is always cleaner right at race time. If you are a racer the Middle Mountain Mama Race is Sunday May 5.
